I was thinking about tracking down a Race Base EK9 which would be used primarily as a daily drive around country lanes, I don't so many miles per year and I hardly ever use the motor-ways so it doesn't have to be super-duper practical. Just as fun as possible and a bit different.

I understand it has PAS as standard, but no ABS.

ABS is fine on dry tarmac, but it's actually worse in wet conditions than normal breaking so I don't see that as much of a disadvantage and after driving my Golf for 2 years I must have only activated the ABS in hard breaking less than 5 times.

Would I be expecting a nice discount on one of these when compared to a normal EK9?

Im more than sure these are more expensive than normal EK9's as these are alot rarer although they have less in them.

Unless you're after a dedicated track car, I don't think it would be worth your while going for a Race Base...

the race base does not have power steering.sure it has the n1 crank pulley which only drives one belt which is the alternator.

Is there any reason for it though?

If I got a lightweight EK9 the only difference is some Recaros, AC and ABS. I just thought they'd be around a grand cheaper than the same mileage/year normal '9.

Solved: In all the '9's I've looked at they were all "fake" N1 Spec. They were just EK9's with a weird selection of extras. I just saw the real N1 Spec interior and trim in a post by RVM.

Thanks Shooter.

I have a race base EK9, it came with crappy interior not the red trim and Recaro's.

They do come with power steering, but no ABS, Airbags or power windows.

It doesn't have the N1 pulley either. Ive upgraded my interior to the recaro spec, just need to re trim my door bolsters in red.

They were around 40kg lighter than the 'normal' spec EK9 and I believe have thinner glass also. And absolutely no sound deadening.

Its an absolute blast to drive when giving it some on B roads. Feels more focused than any other 9 I have been in.

If you wanna have a look around mine give me a shout or if you are after one, I could be tempted to sell if the right price is negotiated. I love my car to bits, but Im struggling to afford it at the moment what with being a student

Let me know, cheers Nath

PM me some info please :)

Yeh, I'm currently mulling over running away from my degree since I found out I can get a better one doing distance learning for £400 total cost after grants instead of £6k for another year at my current uni.

Bsc (Hons) (Evolutionary Biology) Exeter < BSc (Hons) (Applied Biosciences) Ulster

Edit: Lol I just realised you posted on my thread in the wanted section - 74k miles is getting a bit high for me depends what price you're looking at though.

Yeh, I know what you mean about the cost. Its ridiculous!!

I've got 7 years to do aswell BSc Architectural design and Digital Innovation, plus my Part 2 and Part 3 :nono: Its gonna get harder before it gets any better!
Should be worth it in the end though :nice:

You Have PM

Let me know what you think. Like I said I'm reluctant to sell cos I absolutely love the car, but its getting difficult to afford it and it might be time for me to bite the bullet as it were! :((

At least you can do something to earn some money £££ at the end of yours lol, all I will be able to do is use a microscope to a degree level :(

When the EK9 came out into showrooms, buyers had the choice of selecting what they wanted. They had the option to have no PS, no ABS, no AC, no anything really. This basically made the car cheaper for those wanting to dedicate it for track work.

All the type R range has this option even the current FD2R in japan atm. Its nothing special really. You can get any nice condition EK9 and strip it yourself. But there was one difference and that is the Rear and Front reinforcement bumper bars had been thinned down to reduce weight. Thats about it.

So in reality if you pay more for a stock Race base than a stock EK9...your a mug

X3

They are only worth the same or less depending upon level of extras and mods etc.

Just to confirm, I didn't say I wanted to buy a Race Base for more than a normal EK9, so I'm not a ----->

race base model actually come in ek3 dark gray interior. Why pay more when you can get a souped up EK9 with black interiors, recaro etc?

Get a Type Rx for cheaper price, then sell off the interiors and make more money roll in.
