Removing Air Con ???

Hey Guys..

In the middle of building my Ek9 for some mild track use, drag strip etc - also daily drive. Would I see any power benifit from removing air con ??? I live in scotland so its not really needed. Also is there any lighter pullys out there etc without removing power steering etc.

Could some kind person give me a rough guide on how to DIY remove the Air Con pleae..

i wouldent take it out unless you need the space or its broken. i took mine out for both reasons :nice:
 
i took myne out as its excess weight and its steels a bit if free running power from the engin...it also makes he engin look a lil bit neater and i ant justify haveing aircon in ireland!!!
 
the best thing to do would be to take the belt off the aircon pump or you could buy an n1 pulley(only has space for timing belt,but this means no power steering and if you have no power steering pump your steering rack won't get oiled (there are ways round this tho).
 
take the air con out!!!! i live in ireland. i saw a big difference wit out it. it also improves mpg too. my mate just snipped all the pipes when he was takin it out n when my new engine was bein fitted all the pipes were removed. the air con and spare wheel together weigh around 5stone!!!!!! its like carrying half of yourself again depedin on how much u weigh
 
ya it does make a big dif ur freein a load from the engine gains power an saves weight!!
 
Hmm, I did this on my EK9 , I shave off like 40 - 50 pounds from the car, I put it back in, I'm a a/c addict lol. Specially when it rains and during summer.

You will shave off some weight, but hmmm for a daily drive, I think you will loose more that what you "win". If you can live without a/c , go for it :)
 
can someone still put up a proper how to degas and remove the system though as i need to take mine out (the stuff behind the glove box) to get to a leak?

will be wanting to put it back afterwards to?
 
your better off just gettin rid of the air con altogether, ya live in wales and the weather is never really gonna be warm enough, same for ireland where i live!!!
 
personally i don't think you should remove it. the engine was balanced with the a/c in mind, so removing it will mean unbalancing ur engine.

i was planning to remove the A/C as i dont want it!

Is this ur opinion... OR is this a fact..? :confused:

Are you sure CyprusEK9?? :D Never heard of it before :nono: Whatever the truth is, the fact remains the same, i.e, the car will become faster!!
 
the whole car is balanced so the air con would have to come into the balance of the car...but it wouldn really be anythin noticable balance of the car wise....u gain a bit of power an save weight more than anythin.
 
Type R's are probably the only cars that are balanced with an average weight driver in it (around 65kg, not like the rest of us fat b**stards!) but also engine wise the crank is balanced with the a/c, power steering & alternator in mind. So removing any of the 3 will unbalance the engine, which will increase vibration.

i weigh 74kg :nerv: ...

personally i think i will remove it saving a bit of weight @ expenses of increaseon engine vibrations... fitted a torque engine damper recently & now becoming acustomed to vibrations! :D

You are mistaken. In piston engines you have 1st and 2nd order vibrations, 1st order vibrations being the vertical movement of the piston up and down, second order vibrations are uneven forces on the crankshaft generally associated with four cylinder engines due to not being able to have a firing sequence that puts even forces on the crankshaft during the compressin and combustion strokes.

When it comes to counteracting these vibrations - 1st order vibrations are corrected for by the crankshaft counterweights, second order vibrations are 'absorberd' by the factory bottom pulley; also known as a harmonic damper. If you notice the design of the factory pulley encorporate what could simply be described as a lage rubber bushing inside.

The alternater, pas pulley and AC do NOT affect the balance of your engine, but do draw energy from it as auxillary devices.

When you have a crankshaft re-balanced- you have the counterweights are smimmed to represent the weight difference going from the cast to the forged pistons. You will notice the factory drill the counterweights in the b-series engines.

I have removed the complete AC system on my car but retained the PAS for daily drivability. losing any of these components even the alternator will not affect the balance of the engines internals.
