Hey guys ,

ive been in bodywork for over 10 years now and thought it was about time i had a play with a bit of carbon fibre :nice: . altho i have years of experiance with fibreglass kits i have never done carbon myself so i thought i would make a photo diary for you all over the upcoming weeks so you can see my ek stuff for my trackcar :) im just going to try smaller objects first so if it goes pair shaped im not going to cry too much about the cost lol

Ive just started work on the rear numberplate surround :p . ive got the gelcoat and a few layers of fiberglass on it . in a week once this mould is cured enough i will be able to make my first carbon piece from it

Nice, am i right in thinking you are actually making a mould from an oem piece in order to make carbon fibre parts the exact same dimensions?

yes well spotted . im also using very high quality resins so there should be no/min shrinkange so it fits like an oem part .. the bad bit is they cost 6 times more than the standard resins :( but im a true belive in quality and not quantity

first stage went well :) the mould looks good and was easy to remove from oem part , plus the oem part is in as new condition :) . ive got to let the mould "air" for a week now and then ill start attacking it with large amounts of carbon :win:

dude wat bout the tabs on the rear to mount the recess???
and looking good mate the mould looks very smooth and consistent
p.s dibs on one if you decide to make them to sell :D
-si-

All the original tabs will be present once the carbon is applyed so in therory it should just clip and bolt in as the oem part does :)
ill see how things shape up with this piece first but if all turns out good then ill still have the mould to make more :) just stay tuned .....

nice.:nice: looking foward to seeing this as well my cousin has these ingredients too lol and would love to see how its done so i can beg him to make me some carbon bits lol GOODLUCK with the project hope it turns out well and if you do sell hope you can make a good profit lol :nice:

thanks for all your comments guys

hmm been and bought the carbon cloth today .... £32.50+vat per square meter :( but on the plus side thats for decent stuff tho . as it takes a few layers and the cost of the resin and the mould i have made already this is turning out to a pricey project lol . i hope the end product is gonna be worth it .
Does anybody know that the two square hole in the oem part in the pics above are for ??? my only guess was a boot air vent or have the ek`s got them little vents in the quarter panel ? if they serve no perpose im going to smooth them over as its quicker and looks better but if it is a vent ill have to do it !

Would this be then classified as an actual carbon fibre item or would it be carbon fibre affect?

Just out of curiosity how many m sq will be needed to complete the reg ??

im not sure myself yet but fear not ill post all pics and problem n tips once ive done my first one .

@ General
gorbash is correct , altho firbreglass is used to make the mould its not used to make the final product as it will be 100% carbon fibre . i may have to use a small amount of fibreglass to fit the studs into the panel but thats all unless i can find another way of making the fixing brackets :)

I think I'll just keep watching this thread :))

I dont think the two square holes are air vents, there underneath the rear bumper so i reckon u could smooth them off completly
