Hi folks,

Going to be doing a mini rebuild on my EK9 engine within next few weeks and after some advice, I have done research on the matter but wanted some further advice from people on this forum as there are many people on hear knowledgeable on the subject.

The engine is a Spoon stroked B16B. Its smoking at idle, in VTEC at high RPM. The valve stem seals, PCV valve have been changed. This helped but didn't cure the issue. After research its either going to be Valve guides or piston rings so both are going to changed. I'm after advice on what brand products to use, I know alot of people would say OEM. Below is the list of things to do:

  • Valve guides
  • Valves
  • ValveStem Seals
  • Headgasket
  • Piston rings
  • Cambelt, tensioner and waterpump

Valve Guides:
For valve guides I have been looking at supertech and Ferrea. I've read magnese bronze will create a better seal but won't last as long. The car isn't a daily, more of a toy so will cover around 5k max a year.

SUPERTECH BRONZE VALVE GUIDES Civic Si / Integra GSR / Prelude B18C B16A H22A | eBay
Ferrea Valve Guide DOHC VTEC Honda Acura Civic Integra GSR B Series B-Series | eBay

Anyone used these guides? Good or bad points?

Valves:

As for valves I have seen these:

HONDA CIVIC INTEGRA B SERIES INTAKE VALVE B16A - Civic EK9 Type R Parts
http://japserviceparts.co.uk/honda-civic-integra-b-series-exhaust-valve-b16a-b18c.html

Have you used these valves before or would you recommend sticking with Honda valves or supertech or ferrea?

Edit: just read that the type R intake valves are different so will most likely just go for Honda ones.

Piston Rings:

Was going to go with Riken as I know Honda use these, can't seem to find any in stock though so was going to get NPR or TPR instead.

I know this is quite a long winded post but any help would be appreciated. Going to order the parts within next week or so.

Thanks

Nick

is stick with honda for the
ValveStem Seals
Headgasket
Piston rings
Cambelt, tensioner and waterpump
not sure about the rest but you cant go wrong with OEM in my opinion!

Thanks for the input bud. The headgasket is a Spoon gasket at the moment though so its a different thickness so going to stick with that.

Anyone got anymore advice on this? Need to start buying the parts shortly. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

I've never modded a head but I know super tech stuff is superb.
Waterpump I would buy std for certain.

I see your from West Yorkshire. I'm from Leeds if you need a decent place to do a pressure test and skim? Can't recommend ashby and Andersons enough! On whitehall road. We use them all the time for head work on landrover k-series head gaskets

Hi mate,

Yeah im from Keighley about 12 miles from you. Thanks will have a look into it although I think I'm going to take it to Drakes engineering near Bradford as my dads work uses them quite a bit.

Never heard of them mate, but my garage is on gelderd road so we don't really use anyone in Bradford. If you know there work can't go wrong! Ill be buying a b18 for my civic in next few weeks And doing a similar rebuild. Will all stay standard just to future proof really. Your car is stunning by the way.

Yeah I thought as they are quite local aswell and will turn it around in a week. Cheers man glad you like it. B18 is defaintely worth it in an EK chassis. You going for a B18cr?

I would go with a SUPERTECH valvetrain so you can drop a more aggressive cam in a later date if you WISH.

I'd stay OEM on waterpump / oilpump / cambelt & tensioner / Piston rings

Definitely genuine honda for guide seals .

For the valve guide . Super tech are good ..

I should be getting a c4 at a really good price, so that's swaying me that way. Should still pull well when mated up to the s80 I got to go with it.
