Hi Guys..

Im curious. I am thinking along the lines of getting a LSD and 4.4 FD fitted to my gearbox in future(s4c AFAIK on my 97 ek4). now i have been thinking, what would the differences be if if where to have a 4.4 FD with LSD fitted to my box as opposed to the ITR/CTR boxes - iirc they have dual syncro mesh etc as well? maybe somebody can clear the air here?

so the fact that the boxes wont have the dual syncro mesh etc wont affect it at all? why have it then in the ctr boxes if they have LSD and FD?

Non Type-r (EK4 ETC ) S4C and the Type-r S4C all have dual synchros , same sleeve sets , no difference.

****! So the only differnce then is the lsd and fd? So essentially by fitting an aftermarket fd and lsd then one has a ctr box? Bar the fact that the parts are not OEM.

If so then this brings me to another conclusion. The lsd part of this, I heard that there are two types? Helicoil(sp?) and some other? Afaik the ctrs have helicoil? Now if I where to look around for an lsd here on ek9, what's the general condition etc? Are they frequent enought here(I'm talking OEM) or not? Also when buying aftermarket i presume helicoil is the way to go for my gbox? Basically what I'm saying is I'd love for the lsd to be OEM- has anybody bought a used lsd here off ek9(hence why I asked how frequently they sell and what their condition is?)

Yes , bar the FD set and LSD they are Identical .

The standard LSD is a Helical (or Torsen for some ) type differential . These dont usually wear out like a plated clutch type LSD.

The only damage that really happens is where something passes through the gears and damages them .

They come up for sale every now and then but a wanted thread might be better.

If you have the money to buy a new aftermarket LSD and can put up with some noise Id suggest a Cusco RS 1-way ( Plated Clutch type LSD )

Aren't the helical less maintenance? Also I see you mention that the aftermarket ones make noise( the infamous clunking I have read about) - do the oem lsds not have this issue? Also, from the above, they a generally in good condition(by saying this I mean that it won't eat itself after a few months via cog stripping. My stock diff did this last year around this time where the planetary sun gears pretty much stripped themselves- check my build thread in my sig to see what I mean.) If the oem ctr lsds don't give the clunking(it will get on my nerves I know it will.) and will be a straight fit into my box and are less maintenance(more reliable so to speak) then ill defo be interested in looking for one. What are your opinions or views on buying a used OEM helical one from here and what price do they generally go for?

Thanks for the info man appreciate it.

I never heard my DC2 OEM LSD. If you want low maintenance and no noise I recommend getting OEM. No idea about the price.

I have a rollercoaster Lsd on my 9, thank god it aint my daily!

second hand oem lsd diff should be ok

plate diffs work better but are horrible unless your giving it some, i wouldnt run one in a road car myself

There fine on the road if you dont HAVE to drive the car!

May sound like a rookie question but do the OEM EK9 and DC2 LSD's fit EK4 boxes? I thought they were too big.

You will have to change to the EK9/DC2 final drive set , as the crown wheel from the non lsd S4c wont fit the Type-r LSD.
