I think i may have a problem :nerv:

Pulled up in the drive today and my car has all of a sudden developed a knocking sound that increases rate by RPM.... Fuuuuuuck!

Bottom end? Is there anything else that symptom could be the cause of? On a very brief inspection the noise sounds to be coming from the rocker cover but obviously you cant tell exactly. It could be coming anywhere through the engine area.

Any help?

What was your oil level at the time when this noise started?

I havent checked that but ive very recently topped up last week and knocking sound started this evening.

What oil do you run?
Have you track day tyres or uprated LSD - if so have you got baffled sump?
How long did you run it with knocking?
You may got away with a set of ACL Race big end bearings if crank ok. Quite an easy job to fit in.

Hi Duncan,

I use RS2 hankooks. OEM LSD. I do not have a baffled sump. Knocking started as i pulled in my drive this evening as i would have heard it yesterday for sure. I heard it straight away, im very aware of unusual noises on my cars. I couldnt have driven it longer then a few miles at most whilst knocking.

Oh and i use TITAN Race PRO S 5W/40

Well, did you check your oil level tonight? Is it low in oil?

And honestly, that noise could be anything really, right? Maybe its a bit of a belt causing the noise...or a valve out of adjustment, maybe its the lost motion assembly?

Can you record the noise on a video camera and post it to us for a listen?

Hope its not serious mate, difficult to judge without hearing it.

Thanks mate, thats what i wanted to hear. AT least i know that noise could possibly be something else. I'll record it for you tomorrow if i can and post it up.

Cheers chris, i hope not to.

Hope its something minor.

Does the knocking repeatedly occur when the car is running?

Dan, I wouldn't start it anymore you could end up scoring your crank if its a bearing gone. Pull the sump off and check for metal shavings at the bottom of the pan

X2 that was exactly what i was going to say. You should be able to see the metal shavings in the oil when you drain it.

Did your oil light come on when you heard the knocking ?

Cheers for the advice guys.

Ive just been out there and oil is literally on the bottom line, nothing ive not seen before. Definitely a fair bit of oil in there, just under. Oil light is not on nor has it ever been on.

I havent had a chance to take sump off yet.

Ive turned the car on again(I know ive been advised not to, was only for 30 seconds or so without revving) and had a quick listen and its definitely coming from the top part of the engine very much around the top of the rocker cover and the noise is more apparent on the exhaust side is that is of any relevance.

Thats just some more info in the mean time. Finding time/effort to get under there and take it off is a pain.

If there are no metal shavings in the oil/sump then does this completely eliminate Big end bearing failure?

Thanks Kaks,

The knocking is pretty much alongside the RPM.... it will constantly knock whilst the engine is running. Its constant.

If it's definitley in the top end then perhaps it could be bad LMA's as Tama said.

I mean i put my ear right up against all parts of the engine and it almost sounds like something is hitting the rocker cover form the inside. and more so on the exhaust side. I hope it is just bad LMA. Even though if im honest havent a clue what lost motion assembly is

You would hear these as they start to wear? increased tapping but not a knock.
Any big end knock can resonate and sound like its coming from the head , can be heard easier if your under/in the car..

Was the car tappety at all recently? Valve clearances checked regulary?
any black exhaust smoke?

No black smoke as far as im aware. Friends would have mentioned this to me too.

The engine hasnt sounded tappety really, but i havent ever had my clearances checked.

See i can hear the noise under the car too, this is true but i can hear the noise more at the came cover. Thats fore sure. Like said it sounds like somethings hitting it from underneath.

I really do hope its not the big end. Saying that Providing its just bearing worn and nothing else damaged in process it shouldn't be too costly surely?

Does it still sound as its running ok bar the knocking? Sometimes a bad big end can give a ignition knock aswell on a high compression car .. get a hq video up or best bet get local proffesional advice on it

aw thats a dull one mate hope its not serious and you get it sorted asap! good luck! :)
