Hi as above as I'm looking to upgrade to performance cams does any one know what the best ones for around 250-400 new or second hand.

P28 ecu valve springs and retainers airfilter and full ss exhaust and manifold

Just leave the stock ones in unless your going to raise the C/R. After you've payed for everything including the tune you'll regret touching it. An exta few HP just isnt worth it in my eyes for the money you'll spend.

I used skunk2 stage 2 tuner cams on the same sorta spec, probs abit more and made 190@wheels through will hinchcliffe's mapping

It could not have made that power. A guy on here (Ian) made that power and it was a "all out" NA setup.

depends though Rich, Ians engine made 40whp more than his old engine on the same dyno, so yes there was a fair improvement

Yeah but he went all out though on his setup. I can't see how sticking a set of S2 stage 2's in on a near enough stock engine would make the same power as Ians.... If you know what i'm saying....

ive read things that say skunk2 tuner 2's can see a gain of upto 10bhp when timed and mapped correctly

thats a healthy gain on an n/a 1.8 engine

I can see what your saying, I fort cams give u 8-10bhp more over stock as long as u get springs retainers camgears and a good map

They will in a certain area. Its upto you if your happy with that though. The thing is if you are chasing numbers you'll get bored of that really quick. My advise would be to keep it basic without doing internal engine work and get it tuned. That way you'll have stock reliablity, have a fun car and won't have to worry about a cam snapping or replacing retainers .

Spot on.. exactly my thoughts

to get big power N/A, you must raise the CR and lighten and balance everything up.

but you will also see good mid range torque and top end over stock with the right set of cams and the right supporting mods and a good tune, it may not produce pub bhp figures but it will 100% be a much better drive, anyone whos says it wont, either does not have the experience to comment or has tried and failed to get good results N/A in the past by either bad parts, reliability or being miss informed.

It does also depend on your overall goals,
ie if you want to park up in the car park and open the bonnet and have people gush at the bling and or size of turbo or go super fast in a straight line, N/A aint for you

I've done it, succeeded and regretted spending the money because the gain were not enough against the money i spent. Its a lot of money to install and tune a set of cams properly.

so have I many many times and at the highest level.. and proven how good an N/A engine can perform.
Of course as you say it all depends on the goal you want to achieve and how and where you want to use the power.

why did you regret spending the money? did you not get the power you wanted?

Because i got used to it so quick. At first its great, give it a day or two and your used to it and wanting more power. I guess a lot of it comes down to your personality really.... I'm that type of person.

yeh I know what u mean mate if its a daily driver it is a big expense to do the N/A thing and get good power, but on the track a good 250bhp n/a kicks arse.

We get a lot of people asking for cams and we dont just sell them to anyone because of the whole 'iv fitted these cams and it doesnt make anymore power why not?
then you find they dont even have cam gears lol

I agree 100%

Hardcore NA tuning/building takes some good knowledge and cash if you want the results.

I do like hardcore NA setups, you can't beat the response.
