What is this filter??

I have a small pipercross filter on a hose that comes from the master cylider and not sure of: what it is, what it does, should it be there? Is there any advantage to it?

Never seen one on a civic before.

Some sort of "mod" to increase the brake pressure even more? since it is connected to the vacuum booster line..

Read this somewhere else.

My neighbor had his brake booster rebuilt and made sure he put an inline filter on that line to the booster that supplied the vacuum because the air mixture can harden the seals in the booster over time.

For me, the second option is the best explanation.. but weird and in my opinion dangerous!!!
