as the title says really, the valve retainers for my b18c6 keep forming cracks and bend outwards ready to shoot out, its the second time its happend and iv been fortunate enough to spot it early because of a rebuild after it lost compression after 3-4K exactley like last time.

they are stock type r dual springs/valves/retainers but running obx stage 1 cams.

* has this got something to do with the higher duration/lift cams running stock valvetrain?
* can i get away with replacing ONLY the full retainer set with either chromoly steel, aluminium or titanium?
* or is it something that needs performance race springs/retainers?

this rebuilding passion is turning into a ball ache..HELP!

yikes, change that cam buddy.

why should i change cam? not being funny but can you explain because i dont understand how a cam can do this other than valve float issues or something along them lines, if so then springs/retainers need replacing and not the cam! ?

id be buying a set of titanium dual valve springs 2bh mate, cams must be to harsh for standard ones unless they were slightly damaged before install. skunk2 do them for a gd price

Skunk2 Titanium Retainers (Set of 16) - FUNKY POWER

so i should only replace retainers only and not springs? also im trying to understand how the aggressiveness (lift/duration/opening-closing ramp angles) of a cam can cause these to crack, logic would make you think that its the excessive spring stiffness thats SMACKING the valves shut stressing the retainers wouldnt you?

Sorry mate I will let the EK9 professionals help you on this.
Seems that your cams are a bit to aggressive for the valve train you are running. obx cams I have no history with, only skunk2 cams with me.

post up some pics...
Are the cams showing damage?

yeah i will post pics of the cam lobes and the half dead retainer tomorrow hopefully when i get some time.

Cracked retainers are usually associated with the car being over revved Like a missed shift .
When your replacing them go for a set of skunk2 retainers , personally I'd do the springs and valves to while the heads open but that's just me .
Hi lift Cams with standerd valve train works out like boosting high on stock internals .
In my opinion of course

It's probably something to do with the ramp rate/angles on those pile of sh!t cams... Get them out ASAP and throw them away... No one has problems like this with OEM retainers with any othe "mild" aftermarket cam.

How do your rocker arms look?

Obx cams ****ed my head up (car head!), il post pics when i have access to a pc. STAY AWAY FROM THEIR CAMS unless you want to rebuild/replace as frequently as a race team.

Ive seen damage caused from valve clearances not being set to spec, maybe something to check first..

Do obx not give a guide to what springs and retainers to use on their spec sheet?

obx cams? my arse!!

obx cams are junk, i have seen them have HUGE variances, and ass rich777 stated a poor design can break parts, even timing belts can rip from crappy cams.
