hi im new so go easy on me, ive only ever owned a saxo :angry2:, but im on the look out for a civic ek3 the 1.5 vtec e engine, i know nothing about these. what can i expect from this engine , power wise and reliablity wise.. i no its not like a proper vtec but can you hear the vtec kick in , and does it pull when it kicks in... or have i got it all wrong . any help would be great i am keen to start learning

ive got one, theres the sound, but no pull.. :/ good on fuel though , the little green icon is addictive

ok mate cheers for the quick reply, what are they like power wise, im curruntly driving a 1.4 saxo with a few mods so its about 80bhp . are these eninges 118 bhp . with a few mods like a good exhaust system and air filter could these keep up with 1.6 car e.g a 106 gti ,

its not that fast to be honest, but it saves me money on petrol and doesnt look like a box/chav (cough 106)

ok guys thanks for the replies. i take it they are quite slow then, shame i cant afford an ek4 on insurance :((

i had one for two years put custom system on it and tenzo r induction kit went alrite but has no vtec is good on feul as said above. id say great starter car but not worth spending loads of money on if someday you want to get an ek9..

to be fair mine is only going to be 2 year car then when am 25 a turbo car :) then probs a Audi/merc when am 28

i think im still gonna go a head and buy one, as im only 20 with 1yr ncb and these are quite cheap on insurance, i am not to botherd about speed that much as i dont thrash my car everywere, just like to put my foot down now and agen.. ill just put some nice wheels and get it low untill i can afford a ek9 i think

insurance isn't that cheap for a 1.5 still. could also get b18c in there sometime in the future :)

I had the 1.5 VEi (vtec-e) EG Civic for my 1st car at 17 ... (insurance raaapppeeee !!) lol dont know how they compare to the EK but 1st, 2nd & 3rd gear it pulled nicely. But it had no top end whatsoever! Also not much engine mods available to buy for it, i just had intake and custom exhaust. Best bet is to save the pennies for a few years until you can afford the big boy ek9. ;)

I also have an EK3 as well as my 9 and use it as my daily runner. Its a fantastic car, excellent on fuel and to be honest with you it is fairly quick for a 1.5 that also revs up to 7k! I have owned mine for nearly 4 years and it has never let me down. They seem to hold their value quite well compared to some other cars! :)

i can get insurance for 300 quid cheaper than my 1.4 saxo. Ive found one its got fsh 1 previous owner with 67k on the clock, but its up for 1750 , i think its a bit dear , but its got low miles and its not gonna have been thrashed all its life. Its also im silver so thats a bonus. I mite offer 1500, what does every one think, is it still dear , or worth it due to the miles ect.

Mileage wouldn't be an issue if there was one cheaper with full service history. I wouldn't be paying 1750 for one. As good as the engines are you could pick up an esi and spend the rest of the money on fuel.
The engines do give amazing economy I used one for a couple of weeks and was surprised how little fuel it used

there are lot`s of EK3 D15 econo here in Croatia...

popular mods:
OEM D16Y8 standard inlet manifold + CAI
short OEM D16z6 or d16y8 gearbox, D14 works too
OEM d16y8 or aftermarket exhuast manifold
50 diameter exhuast system + cat back

everything is Plug&play, not expensive and you can get aprox 130 KS from this setup, and with short gearbox - feeling of power is much grater.

You can still drive 110 km/h in 5th gear with econo light on :)

thanks for the info, i was thinking of getting a better gearbox for mine, it feels so sluggish even in 2nd gear :/

I had an EK3 1.5 vtec-e for 2 years and it was a great car, never let me down! :) They are not that quick but more punchy I would say. Amazing economy and cheap insurance and tax. defo buy one, I wouldnt spend much on it tho, just save for an ek9! :)

i had a 1.5 vtec e as my first car but it was the 5dr version and fuel was excellent and ulta reliable.

not fast but better compared to saxos n pugs as your first car for me
i was young the so all i did was put some nice chrome wheels on it and debadged it but was really into spl bass so was filled with wires and sound proofing.

those were the days listening to ludacris blueberry yum yum!

i had 2 1.5 lsi coupe`s (eg) and both of em were pretty quick, 115 top end and got there in a hurry, also done a slk merk in one of em, smug tw@ lol
