Opened up the gearbox last night.
Good news:
diff moves freely in the casing,
everything looks straight with no apparent damage.
Bearings in the diff look good
Bad news:
Need new 3rd + 4th syncho set
Locking problem still exists within the diff, with my hunch of the plates being too closely shimmed as the #1 suspect.
