Hi,
Can anyone give me some advice on what to look for, and what one would be a good chice to get.

My b18c conversion im having done, Inoticed the sump is not in very good condition, all rusty and i dont know how long it will last untill it starts leaking!

I know Sppon and Mugen do them but advice would be great.
Thanks,
James.

unless u track the car no real need for a baffled sump...i wouldn worry bout a bit of rust on ur own one either it'll last for ages rust or not

Hi mate,
Yea i was planing on going to the Nurburg ring, so this is the other reason for the sump. Also Its a second hand engine with 44k on it, but its been sitting on the sump and im not to convinced its going to be ok for long... LOL :(

But i know what you mean man, thanks for advice. :)
James.

The Mugen and Spoon sumps are standard Honda oem sumps with 2 plates welded into them. If you want to add the plates they can be purchsed in the States for $25 then get them welded in. There was a full size drawing of the plates on a forum somewhere think it was the CRX forum. Seriously I have a Mugen sump on my CRX and its no different to another sump I have with welded in plates.

McJazz is correct, thats what i did, i just took off my b16b oil pan and welded in the baffle plates i bought for like $25, there made by fastline and can be found here:

Fastline Performance - Products

i also use there clutch line and love it, for the ITR header users they make an excellent skid plate. i've used there shifter too but i dont like it personally...

Thats very interesting. But i still have to get a newer sump to overcome the rust condition.
Thanks for the info i will keep it in mind.
James.

uh not entirely true.

Mugen is technically a 3 piece. since it has two vertical baffles to prevent oil from sloshing around when making quick left to right transitions. It's by far the better design when comparing both. This is ideal since you are going to be roaming around the 'Ring.

Fastline is a good product for the money but they came up a little short. Where Spoon is just two plates (very simply shaped) they have the 1cm turn down lip that helps prevent the oil from barfing up and out of the pick-up under accel and decel.

If you had to spend money on a new unit, I would suggest getting the Mugen one. If you're handy enough, make your own baffling plates. See the attached image for how we modeled ours like the Mugen one.

wow, i had no idea of the differences, thank you racingangel :nice:

Thanks Racing angle.
Any ideas on where i could get a mugen sump from in the uk?

Moroso is good company in USA, my friend has this oilpan on his car but he just got it so i dont know how its working out or not...

It's RagingAngel, but Racing is just as suitable I suppose... :p

Either way, the moroso pans have been well received by most and my only gripe is the fact that it doesn't have a turn down lip. However, their enclosure for the pick-up apparently is a much tighter fit. It's the same concept altogether as the Mugen one, though the Moroso lacks the vertical baffles.

Another one to consider is this:
Moroso : Category Display

The extra 1.5QT capacity is nice. The only problem is? For use exclusively on the Type-R models, it requires trimming/hacking the stock transmission brace/stiffener. I'm surprised moroso didn't take this into account as the ones most likely to hit the track would be the Type-R folks.

Disappointing really... Spoon long ago recognized the advantages of having additional oil capacity since their tuning philosophy does not include the use of an external oil cooler. See attached image.

This pan was originally made available in the mid to late '90s. I can't recall when it was discontinued, but they no longer offer it today. Price back then? About $360.00USD.

One word for the spoon one..... Road humps!
In the UK this wouldnt last long, it would scrape and would probibly not be on for long.

So it looks like the mugen Oil pan is the best one to go for then.
Thanks.

The current Spoon version does not have the kick out capacity. It is a stock pan but baffled.

Yes i got that, But im thinking that the mugen is a better design as it has those bent up edges on the baffles right?

TGM modified my oem one, done 3 trackdays now, no problems. Get a better condition (not rusted) one for modifying? Should guess the Mugen item will be very expensive?

How much did TGM want to modify your sump Haitch?
Sounds like a good idea also were are they located.
The mugen and spoon ones are about £230.
