i was moving my car the other night when i heard a strange noise, didnt think much of it until last night the clutch seemed to slip a little when pulling away on a hill. so i got up early today to have a look, when the clutch was engaging it was making a real rough grinding noise. so next job was to get the gear box off to have a look! a part of the friction plate had snapped and one of the springs was rattling around. dont know how it happened as i dont drive the car that hard. so now its off what is the best to replace it with? and how good is a lightened flywheel?

where my finger is where it broke

Be sure to hose off all that clutch dust in the housing and to replace the throw-out bearing too.

I highly recommend the lightest flywheel possible and that's available in aluminum form from Fidanza. The friction piece is steel and is replaceable. It's part of the reason why I ditched my Spoon one as each time you replace the clutch, you need to resurface the flywheel.

Of course since I intend to keep the car forever, I wanted something to last pretty much forever. Since it costs $40-50 US in my area to resurface the flywheel, it's the same price as the friction shield. 8lb aluminum flywheel vs. 9lb chromoly. That 1lb doesn't seem like much, but it was perceptible to me.

As for what clutch to get?

Check here first :)

clutchmasters stage III for all motor agressive driving, stock for stock driving, clutchmasters stage 5 for turbo applications.

and not to be rude but why did you post so many pics for 1 tech question? honestly this thread could have worked out great without pics at all...

arite .im using the exedy stage 1 clutch and exedy stage 1 9.5 lbs flywheel and notice a big diff in acceleration . although many folk say they get alot of judder with the exedy clutch mine and 2 of my mates using the same clutch in our 9's and dont seem to have any bother with it .

cheers --- john

exedy stage 1 or 2 are fine hyper series exedy clutches are s**t don't go near them best clutch by far is the orc 309 if your using it for track

Metal super single clutches are good. But you have to try carbon to really appreciate the smoothness and lightness, in particular the disc itself.

i wish Carbonetic would hurry and release there blade clutch, its a carbon disk that is supposed to be able to work with factory/factory style pressure plate and be VERY cost effective.

OP sorry i deleted your last 3 pics, feel free to post them in the picture area though.

They were showing them off at SEMA last year, but you're correct - when I inquired, they only had applications for Subarus and DSMs.

They don't seem too keen on hurrying for the Honda market. I think they're still dealing with that unfortunate batch of exploded carbon LSDs....
