Hey folks.....Had to go and rescue a stranded mate in the early hours of Sunday due to his engine just giving out.....:nerv: Its just a D16 engine, but looking for some advice. Listed is what i know:

1. He was driving along and said it just gave out, no power and the battery and brake light came on.
2. When he stopped there was steam/smoke coming from engine bay.
3. *when i got there* there was no oil when checking dipstick (though maybe due to engine been running so not lying in sump.....)
4. Coolant was very low.
5. A smell of metal (Metal on Metal smell)
6. On Ignition 1st time it just squeaked.
7. On ignition it seemed to turn but nothing.
8. Tried to rotate bottom pulley, seemed seized.....:nono:

My 1st thought was timing belt has went and possibly internal damage causing oil and water missing?? and also causing the seizing?? :angry2:

Going to take timing belt cover off and have a look, if that looks fine what next? take head off and have a look? Any one else had this experience :nono:

ooooh **** did he not just buy that keith?

metal on metal might be worn pistons and rings, definately worth a look internally in the engine, what mileage is on it?timing belt might be the issue but if the mileage isnt that high i wouldnt worry about that m8

Yeah just got it, had problems with his 1st car (classic Mini) and convinced him to go Honda.....now he has no engine :wow:

Its only 90k but the guy said it needs a service which i was about to sort for him

He topped up the oil a couple weeks back.....so it did have some so i thought the lack of oil maybe due to some internal damage causing a leak of some sort. Didnt look like much under car but it was wet and as dark as can get

And to top it off he just got chucked out so now homeless and carless

Is there many d16 engines kicking about as a straight swap would be the best option

Was it pouring with rain?

Could you turn the crank by hand?

i remember u sayin keith abut buying it, he must be gutted :(

Sounds totally fu#ked to me :(

+ 1

Hard to diagnose this sorta stuff without having a look, it does sound seized or sounds like it might have hydrolocked.

You should be able to get a hold of D16 engine pretty easily and for not too much money.

craig will sell you his old 1.4 ej engine as it is out the car and mine is now in his lol i think it has covered 83000 miles

Yes it was pouring with rain, what you thinking?? :nerv:

And no it couldnt be turned....myself and the recovery truck driver tried..... :nerv:

I was looking for exact engine so that the loom etc wont need to be touched :p

So i have to assume going from a 16 to a 14 would result in more work than like for like....:nice:

Cheers tho!

There are loads of d16s lying around you should be able to get one for just over £200 tbh

I would not even bother to pull the head off. Its done.
No oil on the dip does not spell good things. Even if it were running, there should be signs of oil on the dip stick. Sounds like he ran it dry and spun a bearing, bent a rod and dead goes the engine.

At the price the d16 go for, its less cost to replace the whole engine. $250-500 USD, over fixing the internals on the broken engine.

As soon as i turned up, i knew the engine had to go! But, its not my engine to replace so i wanted to try and diagnose it before telling him its gubbed

Thanks for all the reply's guys much appreciated! Now to sort out a replacement :nono:

Hydrolocking/engine destruction combined with no oil is my guess haha.

Found a nice hole in the sump today :nerv: To me, looks like something has created this from inside the sump (ie. blowing out) :nono:

Anyway.....its an EJ9 and engine code D16Y7, anyone know of any going or any that relitivly easy to put in to that? Seen a lot of d16V1's and D16Y2's which are SOHC vtec but surely the loom etc is different?

Any help would be great :nice:

no oil, emm thats a problem , maybe why the whole things seized. did he have a oil leak or did he not know about one? engine cnt be fixed if thats the case man myaswell stick a k20 in it ;)
