I always go one the rule, An agressive abrupt vtec cross over was a result of unsuited tunning and was a bad thing.
For your avg. Street Ricer yes I believe thats true. But for all the actual "Race Cars" or cars that are "Tuned" in general I believe it's do to the big Duration jump from the Primary to the V-TEC lobe. I know the Skunk2 Tuner Series Stage 1's are infamous for having the notable crossover because the Primary to V-TEC jump is pretty big.
Primary Int Lobe - 290* @ 1mm
VTEC Int Lobe - 338* @ 1mm
Thats a 48* jump @ Crossover. I've notice most of your OTS Mid-Range cams that most ppl run the VTEC jump in Duration isn't quite as big usually being 30* or less.
And yes Intake set-up makes a big difference too in the sound of the Crossover.
I still have to say it's one of the greatest sounds EVAR
