Gearbox build first impressions..

Ok m8 :), I thought by your post you had ordered a full set from DMRR.

b16bleigh: your old car with the gears was what inspired me to get it.
Hiatch: i only bought 3rd and 4th

Babyface, have you fitted them yet? How's the stock 5th with only 3&4 replaced? Was thinking of replacing only 3rd & 4th. What do you guys think? The car is used in quarter mile but I also use it on the road and I would like some good, 'quiet' cruising. Also, about the synchros, I have just changed them about a year ago, don't think they'll need to be replaced again right?

If you change your 3rd/4th and keep your stock 5th, the new 4th->5th shift would be like your stock 3rd->5th just now.

that gonna be a big rpm drop, it will fall way below the powerband.

Some people want a cruising gear, some want performance.

IMO though, the 1.000 5th is the best of both worlds :)

MFactory, you have PM. What about the synchros, do they really need replacing?

If you've only just replaced them, probably not. Do you get any grinding noises when you shift?

No not at all. I've been driving much more sensibly since I replaced them. They weren't so friendly on my wallet to replace. Not even from 4th to 5th. Just one more question, what about the bearings? They've never given me any trouble, just checking.

TGM recomended doing all the bearings shims etc, if the box is open get as much done as you can. Had to change my selector fork on the second build.

Babyface will be using the 1.000, which is the best compromise for speed & cruising.

as your box will be apart, I would recommend changing the bearings :)

Fonzu: I have not fitted the gears just yet as im waiting for another part from HOnda. TGM are installing the gears for me.
With regards about your syncros and bearings question, if there is no grinding, then i can only assume its fine as you have only recently changed them. HOwever, if you do decide to purchase these gears, the garage installing them shoulld be able to tell you whats worn or needs replacing (if anything at all) as the box will be open.

just got quoted £550 to remove the box and fit the gear set plus all new bearings.

i've emailed DMRR to see if they have in stock etc

think i'm going to go for it
