...Its a track scotland Night at Knockhill!

Cannot wait...Any tips for a first time track day? is it worth taking out insurance?

Cheers

Ross :nice:

i never botherd with insurance when i went but i was in a old **** heap of a vti. u will love it tho, so much fun.

Insurance can be a good thing on your first day, depends on confidence, the weather and also what other cars/experience other drivers have, if you crash into an Evo or the like it will cost you.
Build your speed, do a few laps before you push a little, gets your tyres warm. Keep an eye on your fluids. If you can afford it get instruction or help from somebody who has been round the circuit. Watch your mirrors! Enjoy! :D

go steady and smooth and let the speed come to you,
speed comes with confidence and smoothness, and happens all on its own,

if you force it it will bite!!

take someone out with you so they can tell you about where teh cars are around you,, everything happens allot quicker on teh track than on teh road..

as haitch said keep and eye on ur fluids, and also add a little extra oil before you go out, because if you do start building g's you want to make sure ur bottom end is nicely lubed... (ill wait for the jokes lol)

I kept my bottom end well lubed all day on my first one and had real good fun. Started to get faster and faster and i was loving it. I'd do it again.

Ah yes, the length of the day is longer on the other side of the world at the moment - forgot! :p

Down here its dark at 6 these days...

Knockhill looks like a pretty cool circuit. I remember tearing around there in TOCA Touring Cars on PS1 what seems like ages ago!

Have fun!

You do get addicted, your view on your car will change completely and you'll find out things about your car and your driving that you would normally not even think about. The 9 is a fantastic car to track and you'll be smilling all day, as soon as you drive out on to the track any nerves you do have will go straight away.

Only tip I can give that others haven't said is, don't let the very fast cars ruin it for you...people get so caught up with moving out of the way for everyone they forget their on the same trackday.

I didn't take out track insurance when i was at KH recently Duns, just make sure that your car is in tip top shape before you go.....

-oil change
-tyres all good and at right pressures
-brake pads not running too low
-coolant and other liquids etc topped up
-make sure wheels are all torqued up correctly
-take oil with you

Luckily they leave the 3 cones out for each corner
-turn in
-apex
-exit

These are REALLY helpful i found, at first i was able to get the lines on turn in really good, best to stay as wide as you can before turning in

My mate came out with me and gave a few good pointers....
-Let the car run wide on exit, takes a bit of getting used to but as well as using the full width of track on turn in, let the car run wide to the kerbs on exit, helps carry alot more speed!
-keep your hands at the same position on the wheel ALL THE TIME, apart from the hairpin of course where you have to feed the wheel a bit - doing this felt so much more controlled, means that when you come out of corners you have less to think about and know exactly where the wheels are pointing etc, comes in handy for correcting slides out of the shicane ;)

As for knockhill it is pretty straight forward circuit, but there are a few tips i found usefull.....
-first corner stay really wide to the left and cut right over, the second corner (duffis dip), you want to be way over to the right and pretty much straightline this as it keeps you over to the left for corner three, too many people run wide out of the first corner and get caught in the dip and it messes you up for the turn three
-Turn three is quite off camber so you feel the car slide out a good bit
-The shicane being blind is a bit intimidating but you can take it straight and ride the kerbing hard on exit, there is LOADS of room on exit too so you really dont need to brake coming into it (i finally got the hang of this after my mate shouting not to brake  )

Also with the spoon ecu you should only need 2nd gear for the hairpin, after a few laps you should be carrying enough speed to leave it in third for most of the track, again this comes with confidence, took me a couple sessions out to do this, was using second for turn three, carrying speed in 3rd was way quicker!!!

Also if there are cars hard up you through the corners, just ignore them, you can only let them overtake on the three main straights to concentrate on your driving and wait to let them past

Most of all have fun! I had a hoot down at KH, will be back later in the year, hopefully see you on track at some point :D

Sorry for the EPIC post Duns, but those pointers really helped me, lines etc and most of all the keeping hands in same place...

Hope you have fun and do get some in car footage up!!!!
