what is an oil catch tank and what is used for ?
is a must for a type r engine ?
 
It is to catch oil coming out of the breather. Mostly used on turbo cars. Not much use on a type r except for looks maybe...

people use them for catching oil vapors from the crankcase or valvecover. u can eliminate the pcv system and free up some high rpm breathing with this kind of breather kit below which can be pieced together cheap through summit racing(except for the block fittings). the kit is more used for FI ,ls,and b20 blocks but could serve good purposes on n/a vtec blocks.
heres some reading for that style breather kit, some good reading if u never seen it.

The new Endyn breather kit has been in development for over 4 years. It's designed to provide high performance Honda B series engines with efficient crankcase breathing, while eliminating excessive intake charge oiling and the detonation associated with it.

Regardless of piston ring condition, all Honda VTEC engines all suffer from excessive crankcase pressure at high power and RPM levels. This is caused by extreme piston speed, long camshaft timing events, and a PCV system that is completely inadequate at high throttle angles and low manifold vacuum levels.

Many of today's large displacement B series engines are based on new blocks where Honda deleted the breathing "can" (on the rear of the block), causing these engines really suffer from extreme crankcase pressure (frequently high enough to rush past the seals, blowing the spark plug wires off the plugs.) Pressures like these cause oil and other contaminates to severely degrade the quality of the mixture in the cylinders, reducing power and greatly increasing the possibility of detonation.

The new ENDYN breather kit uses a remote (modified) Moroso tank to separate oil vapors from the air that the engine inhales via the PCV valve, provides two large diameter block located outlets for excessive crankcase pressure, an (off-road only) breather filter to vent vapors to atmosphere, as well as a tank drain-back system to return excess oil to the crankcase under light throttle and deceleration.

On highly built engines or any 2.0 b series vtec its a good idea...
 
install catch can tap/connected in the front valve cover and i noticed that there is presence of water vapor inside the catch can, is this normal

yes thats normal unless its a ton of water. i guessing u your catch can tank isnt vented, unvented tanks have this problem more cause the hot oil vapor air condenses in the tank and makes alittle water. i used to have a turbo setup with a vented catch can setup and i used to see steam come up through the filter of the can. but finding alittle water is normal.
 
Have one here i bought for my old glanza was wonderin if it would be worth puttin it into my ek9? since i have it lieing around doing nothing they dont actually do anything other than look good anyway far as i can figure out?
 
JDM catchcans only catch vapors and oil when they threaten to barf out of the motor due to extended high speed running.

USDM catchcans are designed to enable ventilation of the crankcase pressure which assists in the preservation of such things as ring seal and prevents a condition called blow-by - where the pressure of the crankcase exceeds that of the piston rings and the pressure (along with oil) finds its way into the combustion chamber.

Prolonged exposure to this effect will cause detrimental/excessive oil consumption.

this is a USDM setup where it vents with large AN lines off the front of the valvecover. This particular setup is from B&R fittings. They can be found on google or on honda-tech or even in our very own sponsors forum.

Despite what anybody may think, this setup is a good idea even for stock motors as it helps to keep oil consumption to a minimum. The added pressure relief can be felt when you run at high rpm.

really needing one of these as my builds suffering a bit from blowby - do the guys stateside leave the stock pcv system in as well?
 
most of the time the stock PCV system is removed and the entire setup is allowed to vent to the atmosphere.

Endyn's can shown above has the ability to quickly convert to the use of a PCV for those that must undergo emissions testing.
 
I bought a Cusco one today, not really necessary for my build, bought it more for a bit of engine bling! Plus if I ever get round to installing Jenvey TB's it might have been a good investment!

If you ever get around to installing Jenvey's, then you ought to get the setup from B&R.

Really? Well that's put a downer on my purchase lol! Thanks for the heads up though......just remain a bit of bling for the time being :nice:
 
I haven't had much luck with my Endyn...I attribute it to the small diameter hoses - which causes oil to be carried along with the pressure/vapor - compared to that of the B&R.

Still, others have found it to be effective, but I have yet to hear anything bad about the B&R, though one possible drawback is the complexity of install which requires welding for the B&R.
