Hi all, wondering if I should get an oil cooler for my road- track car.

Last outing my oil temp gauge was hitting 125 degrees C at kirkistown, and was wondering how much will it likely decrease with a small oil cooler?

Any experience or feedback much appreciated!:thanks:

Ive used a small one, and they work great! Just be sure to get an oil thermostat to run it.

What do you mean mate? As in it only flows thru the cooler when it gets over a certain temp, like the engine coolant system?

Don't know too much about these systems, all I've seen so far is sandwich plates with hose in hose out connections directly onto the cooler itself.

Yes, otherwise the oil can struggle to get tocorrect temp.

Here is my setup while I was changing the size of the oil cooler from small to large.

Mocal do a thermostatic plate, that doesnt come with JDMYO tax with it

get the mocal one mate, think mine is a 13 row thermostatic one on the teg engine i had at kirky,as said make sure its the thermostatic one. it kept my temps down well around the track

I wish I got my hands on this one...

125C is totally fine with good full synth oil eg Millers CFS , Motul 300v etc , actually the oil is in its prime between 120-140C ,

140C and above , Id get an oil cooler but you wont see those temps doing trackdays over here.

Imo save the money , hassle and risk , it only adds to more things going wrong.

not one issue with my setup, not-a-one!
then again I did it the best I could, and its only a track car, never on the streets...i track mostly in the deserts in California with ambient temps of 100F and above.

Exactly though , see you minimised the risk of a problem because you did your setup properly (which is expensive) , but most of all you needed a cooler.

But If you dont need one , dont buy one .

I know where your coming from darragh, just the last time when the oil was at 125 degrees C I thought I better get something better sorted.

Most if the time I never need to come out of 5th gear around home, but I have a supercharger to go on at some stage too so probably no harm in doing it either.

Hard to know what to do to be honest:nerv:

would the oil coolers not have an impact on oil pressure?

id say if you wrapped your exhaust mani it would help also

:nice:

And if you do it, do it right, or not at all.
