Im putting brakes from a vti civic on to a EJ9 civic hatchback(1.4ltr hatchback) which has drum brakes on the rear. My question is, do I need to change the brake proportional valve on this to one from a civic with disc's all round? I had to change this once on a eg shape civic I converted rear drums to discs on but not sure if its the same on the 96-00 model.

Your going to get many diff views on this. The prop valve on your car is set up for drum brakes. They take less pressure to work than disk brakes so yes you need to change it.

Some people think the ek's come with whats called the 40/40 prop valve. This maybe so in the usa but in the UK they do not come with it. Get one of these and change it out as the rear disks will need the extra pressure to work correctly. If you dont do it your pedal will travel a great way before the brakes work.

There is another thread about this on here and this was the discussion before.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that. However I taught it was the other way around that it needs more pressure to work the drum brakes than discs, IIRC when I did the swap on the EG civic it was wearing the rear pads quickly until I changed the proportional valve:confused:

no, 96-00 civics with small discs in the front and drums in the back use the same prop valve as the VTI. They end up needing the same amount of bias, DO NOT CHANGE IT.

edit: this is assuming both cars do not have ABS.

don't change it waste of time and money the one that you have work fine i done it a few times

Blinx this may be the case in the USA but here in the UK they dont. I have done several of these conversion and when you leave the stock prop valve in the pedal has way to much travel before the brakes kick in.

Once you put the 40/40 on the brakes work as they use to and there is not much pedal travel.

I think your correct mate, as I done the swap today and the brake pedal feels like crap and there aint no air in the lines. Im gonna swap the proportional valve the next day I have the car back to me and will see the results.

so what ek will you find a 40/40 prop valve? i have done a 282 front disc conversion and rear disc conversion it used to be a ej9 so it still has the standard ej9 servo, mc and prop valve tbh the pedal is pretty shizan

did you change master servo or anything else?
you changed from a ej9 right?
let me know your findings please!

not you lol but your not finding it very good? or good? shizan as in?

no you don't, I have ctr 5-lug conversion on my 00 ej6 & it works fine!

Ok a update. On the UK spec EJ9 you should change the proportional valve when doing a rear disc swap. but to get a good pedal feel you should also change the M.C to one labelled 15/16 and you will need to change one of the pipes coming from the M.C to proportional valve as with the 15/16 M.C both pipes screw in to side and on the EJ9 M.C one screws in to the side and top front.

Also I was gonna swap the front brakes from the vti to the EJ9 but when I went to do it I found the disc and caliper is the exact same size so I researched abit to make sure I was totally correct and found that on 98-01 EJ9 civic's use the same front brakes as the vti standard from factory so only civic's prior to 98 will have the smaller caliper.

yeah thats correct info there!
what the brake valve on ej9's then?
im doing my 5 lug swap next week and changing the mc and servo to 1" from ek9 but not planning on changing the prop valve

Im not 100% sure about the prop valve on the EJ9 but it doesn't flow a even amount of fluid to each corner as it takes more effort for the drum brakes on the rear to work. Changing the prop valve from a civic with disc brakes all round will get rid of alot of the mushy feeling when braking.
