Removing ABS...

I've got a 98 Civic EK4, I've spent the last few months stripping it of all the sound proofing, unnecessary brackets and all the standard seam sealer... I've now prepped and painted the inside of the car satin black and am starting to put it back together, one of the jobs I planned was removal of the ABS, has anyone on here done it? I've done loads of searching and can't seem to find a great deal...

You need to speak to StevenEK9, IIRC he's one of the only guys here that's done it..

Ahh... lets hope he sees this thread :D

All I need to know is what parts I need to buy/replace and some basic bullet points of what I need to do, that would be massively helpful :)

Could always pop him a PM, he's a really helpful guy, sure he would be happy to bullet point a few steps for you!

Im pretty sure it just invloves getting a non ABS prop valve and running some new lines
I plan to do this as well

You will need the following.....

-Non ABS 40/40 prop valve (got mine from the US off a civic Si)
-Brake pipe, I used cupro nickel, THINK it's 3/16"
-Flaring tool capable of doing double flares
-10mm male brake fixings

Basically you can reuse the rear brake pipes but have to make up new ones from MC to prop, and from prop to front brakes

I'll fire up a couple pics when i'm home that I took with the engine out and the new lines installed :nice:

There you go, gives you an idea of pipe routing

Worst part is making the brake lines, i spent adges bending them neatly etc, worth the effort imo :)

Sweet! Cheers Steven, that's really helpfull...

I had planned on getting a set of braided brake lines, and as I need to replace some of the lines anyway, is there any reason I couldn't run braided lines all the way from the MC to the calipers? Possibly routing the rears through the inside of the cabin..

Don't really like the idea of hardlines lol

As long as they have the appropriate fixings etc I can't see why not!

Get in touch with Gerry @ performancetek in Glasgow, he is a Hel distributor/supplier and has infinate experience with Hondas, should be able to sort you out with braided brake lines :nice:

Ok Steve, I was planning on speaking to Gerry about the lines :)

I'm currently putting my car back together after some major strippage and rapainting of the inside, which involves refitting the wiring loom, I'd like to remove all the abs wiring before the loom finally goes back in, if I leave out all the wires, the ABS relay and everything apart from the lines and ABS pump until I've got the necessary bits to remove it all properly would there be any issues? I've heard of people turning ABS off by removing the fuse from the fusebox, would leaving all the wiring and components off do the same? Would my brakes still work?

It'll only be temporary until I've got all the bits, but I don't wanna fit the loom, route all the ABS wires and relay ect, only to have to take it out further down the line.

Well, I've put all the loom back in and plugged it all in... Including all the ABS, but now I fear it was a bad idea and quite want to go and rip it all back out... I know for a fact I want rid of ABS, but not sure how soon I'll get the parts, but whilst my car is semi-stripped it would be easier for me to sort it now.. I'd already seperated some of the ABS loom from the rest of the cars loom, but I think I'm gonna go do the lot now, otherwise when I come to change the prop valve ect I know I'll just think "ahh stuff the wiring, i'll just leave it" and It'll annoy me, don't want there to be the slightest trace of ABS when im done :D

I assume my brakes will still work, but ABS won't?

And Steven, if you don't mind me asking... Roughly how much does it cost for all the parts needed?

Most expensive part was the prop valve, was about £50 delivered after tax from US ebay :nice:

Brake pipes etc are very cheap, luckily i just borrowed my mates flaring tool for making them up

Sorry to dig this up, but the proportioning valve doesn't have to be set to that exact angle does it? I'm going to use the non abs 40/40 valve on a different set up, and was wondering if it needs to be fixed like that or can be anyway up.

Cheers

sorry to bringing up a old post,
recently i jus bought a engine conversion package which includes engine, engine harness, and interior harness.
When Iam checking for any wire cut, i noticed a box(looks like an ecu). I start wondering what it's for, i searched online, it's the abs ecu. I don't want to keep it so iam wondering if i can remove the whole Abs system/wiring in the interior without effecting the engine ECU?

sorry for borrowing this pic.
That ecu with orange plug is Abs ECU right? just to reconfirmed.

All orange connectors on the car are ABS related, so yes should be the ABS ecu, however it is usually on the drivers side kick panel, not mounted with the main ecu

ABS saves lives! screw it, I'm taking my brakes off, just gonna stick my chuck taylors out the door when i need to slow down. FTW!

ABS is only a safety feature

I run 300mm proper race brembos on my car with a full race pad and the car does not lock up even under the heaviest of braking

Don't knock it until you've tried it :nerv:

steven is right ive removed the abs and the car is much better at slowing down now even under hard braking no locking up and very easily controlable
best mod that was done for as little as 40 quid :D
-si-

I disabled my abs but didn't remove it as it was cutting in when it didn't need to. Braking was so much better as before it would try and interfer when on country lanes as the suspension was pretty hard. One of the best mods i did and was free!
