Show or Race car..?

this thread makes me cringe

you dont choose to go one or the other imo, you either love something and have the passion to make it that, or you dont

Oh and my cars properly abused on track but still looks pretty at a show, don't see why people think you have to sacrifice one to have the other :)

all i could do was lol at this :)

ParisTia, what are you looking for? A pure trackday car or a fast cornering road car that's also used as a daily? If you have to drive 100miles a day I would never take out all carpeting, interior, aircon etc. Furthermore I do tend to agree with a few people here:

If you can buy the thing you're trying to build,
buy it instead.

Don't waste money on the EJ9, maybe a set of coilovers you swap out when you upgrade to a faster model but that's it. Nice little motors sure, but they meant for gran to go get her shopping with, if you want to go fast save up the pennies and buy an EK4, it's a better all round package out of the box and honestly doesn't need anything more than a set of stiffer suspension (doesn't have to be coilovers) to be a hoot on track.

Bear in mind that a an engine swapped Civic is likely to have lost all it's trademark reliability. So many are unreliable shitheaps these days, you want something as lightly fettled as possible if you want to spend more time driving than maintaining it.
What he says. Don't spend 1500 on a 500 car and lots of hours of labor when you can get the exact same car only then built by Honda and none of the time investment. Better to spend the time on the better base :nice:

My first ej9 was costing 6.5k finished, complete with D14. Loved it, although I've matured since I was 15-16. And I now don't see the point in spending money making a 90's Honda faster/'better' unless your getting the thing on track or putting it to good use. Let's be honest there are prettier and more comfortable cars available but that's not what Hondas are about, right?

It annoys me seeing a lot of nice parts getting thrown at a daily which is never intended to be put to use. I guess the term is 'show queens'.

Also, I understand your situation, your young and insurance is tight, building an EJ9 is a great learning curve IMO.

If you need to ask people on the internet, don't bother doing either :nice:

I get what you're saying.. however it's the insurance that I can't afford.. as why i've got the EJ9 for a bit now as a toy to play with until i've got my second years no claims under my belt to then be able to bring down the insurance a bit more on another car.. Xxx

If i was in your position I'd save for an ek4. If you start modifying the ej9 it will drain every penny you have and you'll still have a lesser car.

save for an ek4 but still have fun in the ej9 in the meantime right?! what's the harm in having a little fun in a car for the time being? after all its a cheap little car to learn to drive fast in and have **** ups in right!? Xxx

i don't fully agree on that bit. dude i know had a b18c ej9, wilwood brakes, dampers and just drove his car in a dutch time attack series and won from the guys with eg6's and ek4's as base models for tracking.

it's what you can bring to the table as well...

That's also true..

At the end of the day, it's about making a connection with your car.
If you fall for your EJ9 and decide to work on it, that's the route you've decided to go down.

MAYBE the EK4 would be a better base for you, but maybe you'll turn the EJ9 into a track monster and put the doubters to rest? :)

Either way, the car is yours to do what you want to.

Go balls out (as best you can :p) on it and I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Just remember, a modified car becomes a lifestyle. Regardless if it's show or track.

Just enjoy it! :)

surely, i can make mistakes with this and learn from it? I'm sure everyone does? I see it as a bit of fun that is all right? Gotta start somewhere.. Xxx

id rather wreck an ej9 than an ek4 to be fair as well..

I don't understand why some of you are giving her a hard time. If she messes around with an EJ9, surely she'll learn more about the civic (that is pretty much the same all the way to the EK9) make her mistakes on the EJ and then be all the better for working on an EK4 or EK9 if she gets one at some point.

Paris, just have a good time tinkering with it :)
I have a friend who breaks civic and tegs, I could pass you on his details as he has some awesome stuff in sometimes. Just drop me a text on my mobile if you need some help or something.

2Slow2Sensible: you're very right, she's still exploring :) Some things can only be found out by just doing it.

Anyways, you're absolutely right, have fun with the car. I just wouldn't spend too much on it as I think it would be wiser to save that up for a next car. The moment I realised that what I wanted with my EG5 was going to cost more than a DC2 I bought a DC2. And it was a lot better!

Don't spend 1000 on coilovers, get EK9 suspension. Get some 262mm or 282mm brakes for the front. The costs for rear discs aren't that high but time investment is significant while the advantages with a D14 are limited. Get some really good tires. Some nice seats, maybe EK4 seats. EK4 ARB at the rear and maybe a boss to get the steering wheel closer to you. Costs for previous is very limited while it does make your car a lot more fun :nice: The rest of the money that you can save up for a car can be put aside for a better base.

Also, EJ has horrible steering ratio, you're going to have to turn the wheel a lot.

I totally agree with this.. however at the moment.. my biggest problem is insurance so the EJ9 is a perfect little car for me to learn in, mess about it have a laugh and modify in certain ways for now.. I need it as a daily as i cannot afford to run two cars..

Exactly, it's nice to see that someone understands.. i know i might be wasting my money.. but i've got bugger all to play with if i dont have a toy to mess with now..? I want something to build, something to get excited over and take on a few track days and use on a daily.. until ive got loads more money.. and more years no claims then i cant really afford anything else at the moment.. at the end of the day its a learning curve...

you've gotta have something to learn in.. I'd much rather crash my ej9 that cost me 700 quid with a set of coilovers and splash of paint.. than buy something more expensive crash that and be left with nothing.. xxx

the thing is I bought the car for £700... meisterR coilovers for £250.. a rear lip for £20.. and a back box for £30.. something to make the car look nice but im saving money whilst spending.. i totally see where you're coming from.. i'll splash a bit of cash on it whilst i've got it but in the meantime i'll save for bigger and better.. but i wanna have fun at the same time.. as i've said previously.. somewhere.. i'd much rather practise and bin this than buy bigger and better and crash it and be buggered..
I didn't realise how strongly people were against people having a little fun.. aha.. xxx

Thats all i wanted.. haha ive never had a honda before i just wanted something to learn with, practise and mess about in.. and that would be quality!! Thank you!! Pm me, cos im not yet sure how too -.- haha!! xxx

I want something I can feel safe in and take on track.. whilst using it as my daily.. bearing in mind I've never really been into to the track scene before.. For me it was all about a show car.. yet I bought the ej9 and fell in love with it and I'm sorry but at first I thought you could only have 'one or the other' I didn't realise you could have both..

I used to be mad about drifting but again I cannot afford it.. I love a fast car (I had a shitty 1.2 clio sport thing before this and came close to crashing that many many times..) and I'd love to have a proper done track car but again I understand the EJ9 isn't a great shell for that.. I just want a toy to play around with for now to get a feel or fast road driving, a feel for track and something to have fun in until I can afford to buy bigger and better..
I suppose this is essentially my first step into track..

2slow2sensible 'we're all a nice bunch on here'.. yeah.. alright.. lol xxx

Your car do what you want with it. It's because you had to ask that's upset some people, go your own way and do what you want.
Wouldn't worry about abit of interweb banters.
