just wanna ask your opinions on my suspicion that the sync is worn in 4th gear on my gearbox,it gives a little crunch everytime i change from 3rd to 4th but only at high rev's,ive booked it in at tgm's for a transmission fluid change which im hoping might smooth it up abit but if not its gunna be the far more expensive box off and repair job i think.:angry2:

mine does exactly the same mate ! from 3rd to 4th at high rpm, was gonna try the same as you and change the fluid 1st then if needed take the box out.

bloody pain in the arse hey!,ive just purchased my ek9 this week and the cars mint and all the gears are nice and smooth except 4th,just hope that the change of fluid sorts it.

You can try to change the fluid, but I think there is some kind of sync damage :(

as said, try the change in fluid first.
if you still notice the crunch, then book it in with TGM for the rebuild. They are very busy with there own race ream, but the box will come out perfect

iirc blinx used some "magic" (LOL) penzoil synchro treatment when he accidently downshifted once, said it totally cured the crunch... need blinx here really

indeed, pennzoil synchromesh :nice: works great, ive heard Amsoil synchromesh works just as good...

remember, the change in oil is only a substitute till you can replace the syncro.
short term fix you could say

I have also placed an order in for some pennzoil syncromesh. Just had some MTF 3 put in and straight away i could feel a difference in the box, the gearchange is not as smooth as it used to be  very strange

nope, but it only feels bad when the box is cold.

mine was the same but from 1st to 2nd, changed the oil to amsoil synchromesh (thanks blinx) and crunch was pretty much gone, only when it is very cold but after a few mins of driving it is perfect

Hey guys.. Im having similar problems after rebuilding my engine to high spec.. 238bhp n/a...

My gear box feels very loose, struggling to select gears. They are in there somwhere but sometimes very hard to select. Gear selector feels very loose inside the box etc. Any ideas ????

Cheers - Andy

hi blinx im gunna give the amsoil synchromesh a try to see if it sorts out my sycro crunching before having to resort to the expensive gearbox out jobby, just to make sure is it the 'amsoil synchromesh fully synthetic (5w-30) mtf ' that i need to get and do i need to buy three 946ml bottles?

Which is this stuff:

You want this stuff:
mtf.jpg

2 can work in a pinch, but 3 would be best. Remember to rotate one of the wheels slowly during the fill to ensure an accurate reading.

Good luck :nice:

cheers for the info buddy,im really hoping it will help cos 3rd to 4th synchro has been crunching at high revs since ive had the car and now 2nd into 3rd is crunching at high revs aswell! really dont wanna have to pay out hundreds of pounds for a gear box refurb!:angry2:

it's a last resort but be aware that a refurb may be the only way.... since it's being opened up, might as well spend a bit more money on a new clutch, flywheel and final drive ;)
