Its time to improve TV quality and I'm really 50-50 on what to buy between the two! I've made a brief search on the net for the differences but all these specs and features only make it a tougher choice.........In Cyprus we cannot claim superior technology and this is a very recent technology here so I have not enough testimonies on this issue......I want to go to the store and know what to buy already not to get fooled or something.....:D Consider brands please
Note that one of the reason buying it is because PS3 requires HDTV for its high definition graphics. Thanks in advance!

With todays technology the gap between Plasma and LCD has become virtually irrelevent. It depends on your budget. Just remember these rules:

Plasma - Better picture quality, expensive, dont last long.
LCD - Slightly less picture quality, cheaper, last longer than Plasma.
Anything less than 45 inches you are not going to see the difference between the High Definition and Standard Definition.

With that said I suggest the following:
Sony Bravia XBR 2 or 3 or 4 or 5.

Really it doesnt matter which one you get its just a matter of price. Sony has spent a lot of time and money to get the LCD technology just right. In my opinion the quality is on par with Plasmas. Sure they maybe a little bit expensive but in the long run the extra quality is worth it.
Hope i didnt go on a little rant.
:thanks:

PS - who is the picture of the guy in your signature that has to be stopped.
PPS - I also recommend Bravia because it has VGA computer port, an additional add on where you can watch internet video on it. Just think of the porn possibilities!

Now this is a bit vague mate!! I'm planning to buy a 20"(diagonal) HDTV, so why should they call it HD if it has the same quality as the standard one??
 Are you sure this is the case?

Ever heard of the argentine international football player Luciano Galleti currently playing for Olympiakos Piraeus?? Galleti.... Galleti.... Galleti
Are you interested in football?? I have created a thread recently but only few comments there is already forgotten lol!

They call it HD because it can use an HD signal. But you will not be able to see the difference with the naked eye until you get the bigger size. Here in the USA they are changing all TV from analog to digtal HD next year. My advice, save the money until you can buy a bigger TV.

not true, read on why to find out:

your first point is no longer true, plasma's last a very long time now.

your point about the 45 inches is not true either, i believe you are confusing 2 different things, what is true is that you will NOT notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p unless you have a tv 45 inches or larger. standard definition is 480i. on a 20" tv you WILL notice a huge difference between 480i and 720p or even better 1080i. and as mentioned you will need a set larger than 45" to realize the benefits of 1080p.

also worth noting is if you want this for your PS3 make sure to get a tv that is 1080p at 60hz.

lcd will NEVER be as good or even close to plasma, the problem is not technology its the actual design, LCD lacks the ability to display a true black. this might not seem like a big deal but it is. during dark scenes in a film absence of a true black will make seens blury and seem like you have very low contrast, its very frustrating to look at imo. lcd is a liquid crystal display, there is a back light that shines through the crystals to give color to the screen. black is the absence of light, so you cant have a true black with a LCD as a backlight is a part of its design. plasma on the other hand does not have a back light and can display true black.

It is true blinx that plasma's last a very long time now. but they still do not last as long as plasma's.

Why on earth would you want have an HDTV hooked up to a PS3 if you couldn't see it in all of its 1080p glory. That's all I'm saying.

also worth noting is if you want this for your PS3 make sure to get a tv that is 1080p at 60hz.

That was like 2yrs ago. The defacto standard for todays TV is 1080p at 120hz. Also your dead on about the black levels in LCD that's why I recommended Sony Bravia as it has the best black level of any LCD on the market and is just as good as the best plasma.

First, I would like to emphasize again the importance of the existence of a member called blinx9900.......:blinx:
Secondly, I thought that standard definition was 480p not 480i(480 interlaced = 240p) huh? So 1080i is actually 540p which is not as good as 720p. Am I wrong?
So what resolution you think would be perfect for the PS3 considering a 26-28 inches HDTV either Plasma or LCD?
Also what about the burning of pixels on the Plasma? Is that serious? :nerv:
In general, what would you buy Plasma or LCD? :thanks:

lcds are generally better quality but it all really depends on the quality of the signal source.

as for the burning of plasmas thats sort of true. if you leave a static image on any monitor type you can burn an image in but older plasmas (not sure about new ones) were extremely prone to them.

as for size. ... you dont need a 45 inch to see the difference between 720 and 1080, looking closely on a 32 you will notice it but on a 40 upwards theres a definate difference.
my advice - definately go for something thats 1080 compatible as this is the ONLY true HD picture..720 is a scaled down version. you are just buying a lower spec tv with a 720. as for brands. sonys cost a bit more than the budget ones but its still a market where you get what you pay for. :)

yes burning of pixels is still a problem, even in the new Plasma's.
LCD, either Sharp or Sony.

who knew buying such new things would be confusing.

oh it is, i researched for almost a year before i bought a new computer, i did the same thing before i bought a monitor. i was going to buy a new tv and ended up doing A LOT of research about lcd vs plasma and all the different signals/contrastratio's/resolutions/etc... but i never bought one

im going to consult you before i buy a new tv then.

I was going to post this back at the beginning, but there were errors for some reason.

From my BestBuy visits-
LCD tv's frequently have problems with motion blurr, where anytime there is fast motion on the screen like a kung-fu fight those objects become slightly blurred. Plasma tv's look more stunning. You will also want to look for a TV that makes it's black colors not overly bright.

Also, rather than repeat what I've learned from these articles, you should have a read for yourself.

Here's an article on how long plasma tv's last (you'll find out that its a longgg time)

Here's an article comparing LCD and Plasma TV's, it's very usefull.

It seems that I'm going for a 26" 720p LCD Sony Bravia S-Series(not M) TV.
The way people speak on the net about this display is like being the best in the market! A bit expensive though but I think it worths the money....What do you think?? Should I :drive: for it??

LCDs are supposed to perform better for videos games, a PS3 is planned to be connected....Well, is all about Sony at the end of the day
