hi guys just wanna ask,i am thinking getting a final drive for my 96 ek4 b16a with sc4 gearbox, cant decide which ones should i go for, theres 4,7..or 4.9. i do a bit of motorway about 2-3 times a week each time about 35km. if i go for 4.9, worried i will stay in high revs during motorway,i think when you in 120kmh you in 5200rpm so....what do you guys think or anyone have experience with final drives?? thanks

If you don't do any track days, I don't think its worth changing the final drives. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend on petrol. If you do a bit of track days then I would go for the 4.9. On the motorway it would be around 4100 rpm @70 odd mph, that's if you have standard gear ratios.

I have the 4.9 final drive and its ace! I dont do any track days, just the odd 1/4 mile and tons of motorway trekin but its been fine.

Like said above with my standard gear set in my ek9 with the 4.9 FD I am at about 4200rpm at 70mph in 5th gear.

I still get 250miles to a full tank which isnt too bad. accelaration is greatly increased in the low gears but top end is sacrificed but I dont care about top end, dont need to be going over 100mph! I have a basically standard ek9, no head work and I was pulling away from my mates ep3 in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear! he starting to gain on me in 4th and 5th obviously but its great fun!! :)

I ran a 98 spec with the 4.7 final drive in my ek9. There's quite a big jump from 3rd to 4th and it's very noticeable with the b16b.
Have a look at the mfactory gear calculator to see what speeds you'll be doing at what rev's. If you're happy with losing the top end I say go for it

If you don't spend all your time cruising on the freeway, then any extra fuel used on the occasional freeway trip is more than made up for by using less fuel during traffic light driving. Urban driving is more about load/throttle, than it is about rpm, and you will use less fuel with the shorter gears.

Also put a LSD in there if you haven't already got one. I'll have a OEM type r one for sale.

Hi there! If changing to a 4.9 final drive what type of gains (in seconds on standard EK9) in acceleration would you expect ie 0-60 and 0-100 for instance and also how much did it cost for the conversion?

Cheers :)

You have a good point there :)

.

X2 id also like if someone coud varify some indication of gains

Would also like to know that ^

Buy the shortest one 4.9 and have a look for the integra LS fifth gear (0,714:1) wchich is noticable longer rather than the S80 one (0,787:1) not to mention the S4C one (0,848:1). This will lower Your rpms by a lot once cruising in 5th gear on the motorway. There arent many situations on the road where You need a strong short fift gear so there can be a bigger rpm/power band drop when changing from 4th to 5th in my opinion. Pay attention that driving in higher rpms not only causes higher fuel consumption but also raises the noise wchich can be disturbing at longer trips. I have a close gear set with 5th gear 1:1 wchich is excelent for the track but a real nightmare when I have to drive 150km's. I have 4800rpms at 60mph. But gains on the track are worth it :)

Quotes i've recieved

£150 labour to remove and refit box
£150 labour to strip and rebuild box

Plus any parts

Good idea to do bearings if needed and syncros

The main bearings that are worth changing (if needed) come to about £100

And syncros are about £150 each? Think there was 3 in total 2nd - 3rd, 3rd - 4th and 4th - 5th.

Final drive was approx £420 to the door with import tax

Not sure about times but you gain 12% more power and torque with final drive. Although your engine doesn't actually make more power for a B16B it would "feel" like your engine has 207.2bhp and 129.92 ftlbs... :drive: Substantial increase in performance basically.

Thanks for that Ian, thats great. A fair increase then I suppose and worth thinking about. Hope things going well with your motor as not spoken for a while.

Cheers :)

How did you find it ordering it from the states ? ok? how much did the import tax sting you ? Is there no one in the Uk dealing in this stuff ? I'm interested in improving the gear ratios to keep it on the boil .

thanks Garry

if your doing regular long journeys i'd say go for the 4.7 as its a good compromise. the 4.9 is awsome though and you can definitely notice the increase in performance, even if it does get a bit annoying over long journeys. As said before 70mph is ~4100rpm with the 4.9FD. Also if your changing fd put a lsd in there if your havent already as it gives a massive increase in grip and makes the car so much more fun!:))
