Trying to tackle global challenges and hammering it round a track doesn't go hand in hand, and too often these issues are argued by crazy skeptics and/or scientists that give misleading information and can't speak in plain english.
Soooo.

If I go and buy Shell V-Power, my fuel is coming from here: Alberta Tar Sands Before and After | CITIZENShift

Great, so we're all ruining the world by driving EK9's? We'll we can argue about that. But I found a way towards a solution:

Greenergy International Ltd

By buying a fuel thats not from a big IOP - I still emit greenhouse gases and exhaust pollutants. But at least my money goes to companies stiriving to innovate better ways of making fuel to make sure I can still drive my car in the long term. And funding supermarket fuel help keep competition high and fuel prices low. Further the 99 octane fuel looks V-power right in the eye, and the issues with silica in cheap regular unleaded are very much a 2007 argument.

This ain't no silver bullet for making sure your children and grandchildren are happy healthy, not flooded / starving / at war and regular 'ring visitors. But why not make a step in the right direction...:drive:

So where are you saying is a good place to get petrol that doesn't cause that kinda bulls**t ?

That first pic, im sure ive seen that on halo campaign......

on a serious note you do have a point tho

I do love scenic walks in the countryside and try not to litter, but I have to buy fuel from somewhere and the best around for the money is Shell V-power!

Supermarkets here in North Wales get there fuel FROM the Shell refinery in Queensferry! So I don't really have a choice!

Josh..

It's a completely irrelevant argument/point. Do you really think that by a few of us buying fuel from one outlet rather than another it will make the slightest bit of difference to the destruction you linked to?

Just accept it for what it is man, as long as we all lust for money things will continue just the way they are.

thats how i think of it!
as well as voting, i couldnt give a **** this country is doomed anyway

So you live in London? Where do you think your Vpower comes from? Its certainly NOT from Alberta - try using a map and looking at the big blue bit East of the UK ;)

Perhaps to give a balanced argument, you should focus on commenting about how much money Shell, BP & all the others spend on developing alternative and renewable energies.

I don't mean to sound rude or ignorant here, but I don't give a f*ck where it comes from, what those greedy corporations are doing with their money or what renewable energies are in the pipeline.

My point was, and still is, why even concern yourself with such matters? If you're a consumer then you're as responsible as the next man for feeding all this destruction. The companies are just there to take advantage of and action that. To be bothered by things like this will only bring you pain anyway.

I say just live. The more energy you give to worrying about this kind of stuff the more it will affect you.

if you dont buy someone else will, it dont make any difference.

No matter how much research they do, how many nice things they do with their profits, it's still going to get used up no matter it's source or distributor. Every last drop. Everyone is going to keep on filling their cars, planes and everything else until there is none left... Then there'll be a huge nuclear war and we'll all die, or become underground mole-people.

Just enjoy it while it's here, in the end our lives are totally meaningless anyway.

:nice:

If you wanted to get ethical, tesco was by far the worst choice of any UK company going. Other than that +1 to everything jokeshopbeard said !

Pissing in the wind springs to mind, you own a car! If it bothers you that much, bin the car and cycle everywhere, dont go on holiday and dont buy food from anywhere because that gets transported by road-using fuel.

Alright now we're talking.:naughty:

Doesnt tesco buy from the big refinaries anyway?

They buy from this one:

Agreed to some extent. But you can make better consumer choices, take things in the right direction without necessarily having to lose any sleep over such things.

If you don't buy it someone else will and it won't make any difference is not true at all. Fair enough if everybody thought like that, but not everyone does...

I'm still paying money to Shell and therefore still financing those activities. BP and Shell put a lot of effort into developing renewables in 2007-2008. But BP's CEO left under mysterious circumstances and the new one has all but ceased their renewables R&D. Oil spill is BP's wake-up call | John Sauven | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Renewables are outside the business model of the big OPEC and non-OPEC oil players. BP and Shell claim to be pushing for renewables, but still plan to grown thanks to increasing global oil demand for the next century.

Tesco are by no means perfect, but they have done a lot of cool stuff: Tesco PLC - Climate change

Hammering it round a track is great fun, cycling everywhere unless in the middle of a city is unrealistic, and even if not for holidays does the benefit of aviation outweigh its environmental impact? I don't know, but its an interesting debate!

The big point again is: arguing 'lets go and live in mut huts and eat berries' is as useful as saying 'well we're all doomed' - cause I don't think we are yet...

Lets shelve the environmental argument, telling people you know to buy from a supermarket rather than direct from an IOP would help to keep prices down, and the EK seems to run better on Tesco99 than Shell.

Youre right tho doing this as one person is a drop in the ocean, but if you find yourself thinking about things like that, and want to make a little but important change, that's a pretty good one...

Also apologies, should have focused on the quality and price / reward points of supermarket superunleaded and had the slightly better enviro credentials as an irrelevant bonus - textbook error...
