At the moment i'm using 205/45/16" all round on my EK4 for the track handles great but the tyre prices are just stupid for this size ...

i can get some cheap 195/15 inch rims would i loose much handling wise ?

kind of not wanting to spend shite loads on tyres just for the odd track day then again i dont want a car that handles crap because of the smaller tyres ...

also would i have to re adjust my ride hight for the 15 inch rims ?

:thanks:

Is your EK4 standard? I run 195/50/15 and its perfect size, it fills the arch too, if anything 15 inch will handle better than 16 ?

just my 2 cents!

If i was u id keep the 16inch wheels its a good size to have especially ig ur car lowered as it fills up arches without having to go stupidly low. If ur using it for tracks then get some 45 pound budgets google or ebay

Track days with budget tyres? they are bad enough on the road

I hated the handling of my car when I had 16"s. Besides that they're likely to be heavier and the larger radius will essentially mean you're geared higher. imo the only advantage is that you can run larger brakes.

If you like the look of your car with the larger wheels just get a cheap set of 15"s for trackdays. Standard EK4 wheels are pretty light I imagine you'd easily get a set with tyres for less than £100

Standard wheels are a poor choice for trackdays, they are too narrow to provide a decent support of the tyre and the offset is too high so won't give you a wide enough track fro decent cornering stability

I've found 15x7 ET35 to be a great offset and size of wheel for track use. have previously ran oem EK9 wheels on track and a set of 15x6.5" ET42 regas

With each change of wheels the handling has improved. The wider wheels support the 195 tyres better and with the lower offset the car feels alot more stable and planted for cornering

As mentioned, 195/50 tyres are ideal

atm i've got a pretty much complete setup camber front and rear LCA's roll centre adjusters and Coilies... so pretty good im runing TS 1.2 16 inch rims and its low as it is dont want to go any lower already ripped my exhaust off once ...

and this is purely for track anyway its just the price of 80 quid for a decent radial tyre is a piss take ... and 150 or whatever for R888's or equiv...

so i'l get a cheap set of 195/15's for track day's ... got a mate whos getting rid of some for 50 quid they are tsw or somthing so shouldnt be too shabby .. long as i can get 283mm discs under them

195 50 15 r888 on standard wheels for track! Just how Honda intended!

ive been told R888's aint worth the money to be honest i've been told a good set of street radials last longer than R888's ... unless you use a stupidly hard rubber then the grip is crap ....

what do you lot think ? i dont want to spend money on toyo's if they are going to last 2 track days ....

Personally, if your serious about tracking the car then to spend all that money on handling mods but to skimp on the bits which actually connect you to the tarmac is a bit daft.
Can't really comment on wear rate but I've seen plenty of people using pretty expensive road tyres and have the tread to just fly off them in half a day leaving them going home because the canvas/wires are showing.

I use hard V70As on the front of mine and they give pretty good grip. Using them until they're down to an absolute slick I managed to get 3 and a half dry trackdays out of them. Would probably have had more but used them at Llandow which absolutely murders front tyres. I use mediums on the rear and they've probably done 8 with loads of tread left on them.

not serious at the moment but hoping to get to the stage ...

i know its daft ... but im on a skimp budget i earn hardly diddly skwat to be fair ...

what make are V70A's and how much are they ?

Who ever told you a cheap set of road tyres are better than 888 is lying to you. As Clockwork states, tyres are the main part of a trackday and will determine if you have a good one or not.
If you have not been on a trackday a set of V70 or 888 will probably last you a long time, tyre rotation and running them the wrong way (you can get them swapped 'outer' to 'inner' instead if you want) will get you every last ounce of rubber. Even if you are strapped for cash, spend the money. V70 are approx £120 a corner in 205/50/15 so a 195 to go on a 6.5 rim will be slightly cheaper.

get on ebay. my mate buys loads of part worn track tyres for not a lot of dollar, esp if your running on a tight budget, but imo i think doing trackdays running on a tight budget your asking for trouble because your likely to skimp on the things that are needful... i.e tyres.

i dont know the guy who told me track days regulary and he says the toyo's and other semi slicks use up just as fast as the road tyres ...

but swapping then round isnt a problem i can do that free ...

what make are the v70s though

and i wouldnt skimp on tyres hah hense me asking here id rather miss a couple of track days for decent tyres than go to them all have **** tyres and crash because of them

If you can still source a set of Hankook rs2's or stretch and get the Ad08's because either are a good bridge tyre to a semi slick.

!95/50.15 with a 15x6.5 rim is a good start and both easily found

RS2's are not a very good tyre, they are a hard compound summer tyre so not really a bridge to a semi slick, dad ran a set on his FD2 and has recently changed to vredestein ultracs and the difference is night and day, vredesteins have immense amount of grip. I briefly ran a set on my ek9 too and wasn't very impressed

ad08 would be a brilliant choice of tyre though

as mentioned, you can spend as much money as you like on power mods/uprated brakes/trick suspension, but without some decent tyres on there what is the point.

Ah yeah sure the RS2s are far from the ad08 but they still are a good tyre to start on if he's coming from budget tyres , depends how serious you are about it and your driving level.

The Sessantas? A friend has them on his evo , great tyre but only 17s+ AFAIK

wheels 15x8; Toyo R888 225/45/15's
Better than super glue.

Is your event open pit or sessions? I liked the RS2 for the money, but as above on a budget try the RSR or AD08 at approx £70 a corner, or ebay for used. The V70a are Kumho tyres.
