Gym/Fitness thread

I use BSN syntha 6 banana protein. Best out there for taste! :) Tried that PHDbelgian chocolate and threw a kilo bag out, bloody awful!!!

cheers for the info, just trying to get into shape and toned. My main problem is my diet (lack there of).

Personally I wouldn't go too mad on cardio, some silly figure like 200kcals extra is required to maintain every lb of muscle, so if your gaining muscle and eating less/cleaner you should be on the right path :) post your diet if you haven't already :)

Bikes,treadmills etc = cardio

If your aiming to lose weight, use weight! Burns more fat whilst also gradually building muscle, you want to look fit not look like a marathon runner

One of the best techniques to working up a sweat and burning the calories alot faster than simply running flat out on a treadmill is to raise the incline to it's maximum (usually 15%) and fast walk at around 4-4.5mphfor 20-30 mins. I know the calories readout on these machines are waaay off and you shouldn't believe it at all,if you compare the number burnt running in 20 mins compared to my way, there should be a big difference! And surely if you use the same machine it's enough to do a like for like comparison?

I do this 2-3 times a week among other fat burning excercises

This. People get disheartend when they do weights and try to lose weight as well. They don't realise that they are losing fat and putting on muscle so they think they are making no progress on the scales.
I never weigh myself, just roughly judge my size in the mirror.

Running on concrete is not bad for you in any way. Poorly fitting/worn out trainers is the biggest cause of lower back/lower limb injuries not the surface you run on.
Fell running is probably the hardest running on your joints IMO.

Tell that to my knee's. I've run since I were 15, county x country, half marathons/full, last year had to take pretty much 10 months out to let them recover fully.

I doubt my trainers are at fault, having them properly moulded, nor technique.. Concrete is bad! X-country is much better, or just stick to fields lol :nice:

Running on concrete is bad for your knees! Havin the correct foot wear does help alot but you are still fou damage as above x country running on fields etc is a lot better on your knees

Saying running is damaging is complete nonsense. Nearly every form of exercise is damaging in some way.

Football, rugby, cricket, golf, motor racing, hockey, boxing, tennis, cycling... etc

You don't hear people being told to avoid these sports.

I know plenty runners who have run extensively on concrete, 70 + miles a week and have very few problems. Of course there are injuries, but running does not mean you will be crippled when you are old.

Stop scaremongering

Wazer just noticed you're up at Leuchars, don't suppose having bad knees is anything to do with being in the forces.

My bad knees are from kneeling on cold concrete in workshops etc. I love all forms of running and yes cross country/ running over fields is better, but if running on concrete was so bad for you surely they'd sack the london marathon etc.

No no mate, were bad before I joined lol. From lots of running, usually did 20+miles a day easy, with athletic sessions 3-5 times a week - kinda bad when i think of it now, but it's what I enjoyed.

I think we're getting mixed up with a sort of ultra endurance running and err, normal Running to be honest (i'm sure mine hurt because of the sheer amount i used to do), know a fair few people who ran at semi professional level who always ran with niggles and pains and used to take pain killers before runs/races to help them out. They just lived with it as they enjoyed it.

started rugby training again and its killer on my right knee. anyone any ideas on how to build up strength in in or to stop the aching in it. Or is the aching just something im going to have to live with ie cartilage wear.

Started my diet the other day, going well. Eating like a champion and i feel great. Getting up in the morning and getting:

2 whole eggs, 4 egg whites.

about 10 am im banging a shake and banana

1pm 2 chicken fillets with 2 veg

4pm having a tin of tuna and shake

7-8pm depending on wether im at the gym or not that night id have Chicken Fillet steamed vegetables and sweet potato. If im at the gym ill bang some carbs when i get in like pasta or something.

10-11 pm ill bang a shake and some cottage cheese to work through the night.

This varies through the week, some nights it will be steak and broccoli etc.

P.S I've been taking double chocolate cookie PHD protein was getting a bit sick of it. Opened up the strawberry cream PHD and having it as we speak. HOLY ****, it is amazing. Seriously the nicest protein ive tasted. Cant wait to get up tomorrow to have another lol.

That is a good eating plan Jack and if you don't grow quality muscle on that then you will need to train harder!

I would love to have as good a diet as that every day but with the hours I work and even the cost of all the food living in your own house can be hard!

I have lost a good bit of weight and strenght in the gym over the last year or 2 from when I started 12hour night shifts and days, due to not having the time or drive to get to the gym enough and the lack of quality sleep with the nightshifts:angry2: One of the key factors to making gains in the gym is getting a good 8+ hours of sleep every night, then obviously diet and hard training

I recently got some creatine so hopefully going to work out a way of getting to the gym enough between my shifts. PHD is also one of my favourite proteins, seems to work and tastes better than most others about

It's hard to keep the diet up, if I do overtime in work it's a bit of a nightmare. I got some of that jack3d to try so going to give that a go this week.

Super pump 250 or max is what you want jack 3d is weak compared :)

The jack3d should give you a boost by what people say and the name suits you! I have never tried it myself

Im on nightshift atm and my sleeping/eating patterns are now up the left because of it so thats my biggest problem with trying to gain a bit of size and strength

The more important thing with dieting and training imo is being able to be consistant and sticking with it

If u want to burn fat Ull need to train like a mofo! Clean diet, high in protein low in carbs. Eat carbs early in the day. I use phd diet whey. Has everything in it to aid in fat loss also plenty of protein to pump the guns. I used t3s for cutting up in summer. Good stuff but expensive. Plus it won't happen over night. Easy to drop weight but fat is stubborn and hard to shift. Clean eating and plenty of trainning and supplements Ull be grand. I've a good diet plan a friend of mine give me years ago easy to follow if u fancy it pm me
