JDM EK9 Race car project nearing completion

Cheers mate! It's funny, the title says the car's been "nearing completion" for a couple of years now!

It'll be at the stage soon when it'll be as good as it can get, and it'll be all over.

Then I'll chuck in a K series

LOL no matter what people say, the cars are never finished and you will always find something that you want to change

Seriously tho your car is unreal, proper race car and it looks like so much fun on the track:naughty:

You can't beat a good B-series, just stroke the b16b if it needs a rebuild

I've often thought of what to do once the B16b needs a rebuild, and it looks as though K series will be the way to go for future-proofing.

B series bits (especially heads) are getting harder to find down here, and once you start messing around with over-bored motors with big cams you can run into reliability issues. I have thought of building B16a motors though, you can buy them here (running) for a couple of hundred bucks.

Stroking the B16b would put me into the 1601-2000cc class, and without a big power K series (250hp+) engine there is not much chance I would be able to compete with the faster cars.

I won't be stepping up to 2L class until I take out the 1600 class though, and the 1600 class is competitive as hell!

Well as promised here are some more pics. Things seem to be progressing very quickly now, panelling of the underside is starting in the next day or two, and the rad and oil cooler should be in tomorrow or Wednesday.

I've decided to paint the interior while this is all going on (as well as some external body mods) so the car will go to the panel shop almost straight after I get it back. The colour that has been painted in the rear sections will be the interior colour all the way throughout the car. Should look stunning, and not show the dirt as much as white!

Not before I get a s**tload of pics though!

In the meantime...

Well not much to showthis week, as I'm still waiting for the new pics with the radiator and oile cooler installed (should include a sexy engine bay pic).

The "new" rocker cover has been media blasted and had fittings welded on, in preparation for a new breather setup. Also as the motor will now run an external oil cooler the water-to-oil (or is it the other way 'round?) cooler that come from factory has been modified to only carry water, and the intake manifold has been modified to delete the water (heater) hose that was looped back to the motor anyhow.

The rear brake lines (hard lines) have been brought back inside the car, and the fuel lines will run through -6 braided hose that finds its way to the engine bay through the passenger-side door sill!

There is talk of a new oil pan with a crank scaper, so you may find the Spoon oil pan that's on there up for sale in the near future.

In the meantime though, you'll just have to make do with a pic of the surge tank, and the high-volume-low-pressure lift pump being used to fill it.

Until next time!

Well finally got a couple more pics, things are starting to come together nicely! The radiator and oil cooler are in, although as you can see from the pic the oil cooler doesn't have the brackets installed, that should be today.

The extended wheel studs are in (in the rear in any case) and mean I'll be able to run crazy things like 10mm spacers and pump the track out while I'm experimenting.

The underbody panelling should start today or tomorrow, and that's where the real magic will start to happen. If you look at the pic of the rear sub frame (last page) the panelling will sit under the sway bar (ARB) so the sway bar will cross through the car! Radical yes, but necessary to get the air flow under the car as smooth as possible. The exhaust will also sit up inside the panelling, so there will be no turbulence caused by the exhaust waving about in the air.

Stay tuned, this is gonna be something special methinks!

Heh so you came back to read the rest huh? :nice:

All windows are Lexan MR10 except for the front screen. Saved a bit of weight there but didn't take any weights so can't tell you how much exactly :(

Today I'm off to pick up the AN fittings for the fuel system, and the fittings for the breather to be welded to the rocker cover. After that things should progress rather quickly, and I should have the car back in a week or two to go to have the paint/outer skin redone.

think you could do with some front to rear support on that rear crossmember since you removed all the metal either side of it,,

Don't worry, it's coming. The next stage is staring shortly, but getting the fuel system working properly is easier BEFORE the under body panels in.

The pics don't show it very well, but the whole area where it's been cut out has been seam welded to keep it all together, and the aluminium panels will add strength from side to side.

It will all start to make sense once the next round of pics arrive!

sounds good didnt think you would miss anything, looking forward to the next update

Cheers mate.

Fair enough question though, people have asked me:

"Won't it be really loud with the road exposed like that?"

Ok here goes, only a small update, but one I'm sure all of you following this thread will like!

The breather system is finished and in place, along with the radiator and oil cooler (including remote oil filter).

The paneling in the rear of the car has started finally along with the construction of the new exhaust, but don't have any pics of that yet! :(

So here are some pics of the engine bay. Sorry they are a bit rough, but the whole car will be having a complete inside and out respray when I get it back, so they didn't really take much care with scratching the paint in the bay etc.

Note the "cooling plate" on the upper front cross member, actually doubles as a radiator mount for the full size rad. Cool!

On with the pics then!
