I am currently running a Spoon ECU, however since fitting this i have carried out further mods. I now have the following:
-Mugen CAI
-Custom 3" intake pipe
-70mm throttle body
-Skunk2 inlet manifold
-5Zigen manifold
-2.5" decat pipe
-Tanabe full system
-Spoon plug leads

With all these bolt ons is the Spoon ECU fuelling my car to an acceptable level? If i was to go for the better ECU (Apexi PFC) how much more bhp would i be likely to see? Is it really worth it? Thanks

Is it a stock B16B?

Spoon ECU is just a generic map so it will never really take full advantage of your bolt on mods.

Get yourself a P28 on chrome and reap the rewards.

I wouldn't recommend running the Spoon ecu in this country! I put a thread up on here a couple of months ago but basically I asked the guys at Spoon Type One when I was in Japan about their ecus and was told they have been designed to be run at 100 octane fuel or higher only! So you'll almost certainly be running lean with it. If you were able to use 100 octane fuel somehow then they are designed to be used with anything from completely stock to intake/exhaust mods

Yeah i did see the thread mate, in all honesty the Spoon ECU definately transformed my car. However, im going to get the 9 on the dyno soon to check my AFR's, the car is pulling really well though fairplay! Just don't no whether its worth spending on a standalone ECU on a n/a with bolts ons only.

A socketed ecu will cost about £120 and a tuning session with crome will be around £300, selling your spoon ecu will get you about £300 too.

Won't cost too much in the long run.

Yeah its a good ECU mate, its a plug and play ECU though in an ideal situation i would have a standalone ECU specifically mapped for my car. I'm just unsure on power gains, if i knew how much more i was likely to get then it would persuade me to get a socketed ECU quicker..

If you have a healthy engine and with the mods if you run a chipped ecu and get it mapped you would see around 195 - 200bhp and would make a noticeable difference throughout the power range.

Ok cool, when you say i need a socketed ECU i've been doing research on how to run crome and would i be right in saying i need to look for a socketed P30 ECU for sale?

This is a common misconception, Spoon ECU's are not a generic map. When you buy a Spoon ECU you take your car to TYPE One and they tune the map to your current mods. So when you buy a used Spoon ECU you are getting someone else's tuned ECU, which might work good in your car or maybe not. I bought one a few years back and had issues and asked Spoon in Tokyo is they could remap it, first they asked if I got it brand new and what my invoice number was. I said no and that's when they explained that it's not tuned for my car and they will touch it.

Are you saying the octane rating of fuel somehow changes your air/fuel ratio? :/
I thought it was just to resist pinking/pre ignition better? Allowing more advance on the timing.

I love my Spoon ECU was a great mod and i can't fault it. Since writing this thread ive done alot of research into threads on the forum to further my knowledge. I know own a B18C and am going down the Hondata S300 route.

I don't understand how this is true or possible...

You can Buy Spoon ECU's from places like Vtec direct..

Doesn't mention anything about going to Spoon or it being mapped for your mod's

the only details it gives is raising the Redline and lowering the Vtec crossover point.

Management: Spoon Sports Computer @ Honda Tuning Heaven - VTEC Direct UK Ltd! -

I don't doubt what you are saying but i ahve never heard of that happening.. Maybe that's just for the Japanese market ?

Oh and Great stuff Burny, B18C with some nice mods and an S300 doing all the managing Is a WIN WIN combo :nice: Good choice dude

Thanks mate. As soon as i get five i'll be making a project thread for this new one, shes a beaut!

Spoon ECU is ****. Nothing else to be said. :))

Maybe if they have different maps some work better than others? My B16B was a blower with the Spoon ECU and supporting mods, VTI2010 will back that up too i sold it to him and hes had many EK9's
