Terry’s EM1 project

Your local Honda would be able to sort you. I just bought them from Japan because its cheaper than local, and I was buying a few bits, so shipping wasn't a deal breaker for me.

The climate control is all OEM bulbs and the clocks I had changed to LED. Only the illumination though. All the warning lights are still incandescent.
Cheers mate :)

Small update.

I'm still having issues with the car breaking up, in the higher rev range. From 6,000 onwards. Swapped out the distributor rotor for a new one from Honda. Couldn't fit the new cap I got because it didn't fit.
Later on I found out I have a Type R distributor and there are different style caps available... Will have to order another one from Honda  Instead of replacing the cap, I sanded the points on the inside, to get rid of any oxidation. That unfortunately didn't work and the issue is progressively getting worse.
While I try to piece together an order for Honda, I bought a brand new ignition coil and a brand new igniter. Those are on the way and I'll hopefully have them this week.

I've had the car since December 2021. The heater never really worked. As in my windscreen would get fogged up from the cold and the heater would only clear up a small patch on the glass. Replaced the pollen filter and look at this...

The old filter was completely clogged and installed the wrong way. The airflow direction was pointed the opposite way. There was a lot of debris inside the dash and I vacuumed as much as I could. Heres the new filter.

A very fancy Bosch one from Japan. The air coming out the vents is definitely a lot stronger. Will see if the windscreen clears up any quicker during the colder days.

Loving the progress man, i never even knew the ek platform came with a cabin filter every days a school day

Not much of an update, but an update nonetheless. Was fighting with an ignition issue. I bought a NGK replacement coil.

That didn't fix the issue. I actually bought an igniter too, but it turned out to be the wrong one... My car is OBD2, but it needs an OBD1 igniter? Makes sense haha. I have a really rough relationship with this car.

I'll try get her painted next year. People actually like this look, but I got sick of it really fast, especially when I daily the car. I managed to get a brand new distributor cap from Honda, which ended up sorting my ignition problem.

I have another cap in storage, but that one doesn't fit and a Type R one does. Good to know, but at my expense  I have the correct igniter on the way from A4H, as well the weather cover that sits inside the distributor. I didn't know the Type R one is different from B16A2. I have the O ring for the distributor too, so I'll pretty much have the whole thing refreshed. Get the timing done and maybe solve a small oil leak.

Something I've noticed recently is the car kinda hiccups when accelerating. Can't be ignition again, after I just sorted it! It happens when I drive the car cold. Problem disappears when its fully warm. Maybe its the ambient temperature? Because it has gotten colder lately, coming into winter.

For context, I'm running 5W-40 oil, roughly a 30:70 coolant mixture, and pump fuel. I swapped out the fuel filter not that long ago and haven't done that much mileage. The air filter is free of debris. Maybe its my injectors? But I don't see how the cold might affect it.

Anyway, the car drives absolutely fine when warm, but its something that I can't ignore. Also, I'm flying to Hong Kong today, so the Civic will be left alone for a month  I got my brother to look after it. Hopefully I find some nice bits over there, to bring back :D

Respect for all the love and car you put into this, makes for a wonderfull story considering who was the previous owner.

About the ignition problems, you could checl all mass points from the engine on both sides. It wouldn't explain why it mostly happens when cold, but I once had problems with the car breaking up in high rpm's and in the end it was one of the mass cables that had a loose bolt.

Mass cable? Another name for earth? And thanks bro. Appreciate it.

Oh right, earth, I had a feeling I was using the wrong term. But translation websites didn't do so well either :D

I'll check them when I'm back in the country. How many are there for this chassis and engine configuration?

I really don't know to be honest. Back then I grabbed a workplace manual from Honda. But I would expect them all to be servicable from the top. I would expect perhaps 3-4 at most? But again, that was quite a while ago :)

I so need to change my cabin air filter now that you mention this but beautiful build bro, love the progress and safe travels to Hong Kong.

I'm back from my trip to Hong Kong!

I bought the cover that goes inside the distributor before. The part number being 30107-P08-006, which isn't right for the distributor I have. I'm slowly finding out all the differences haha.
Got this one now, which is 30107-P73-004. It fits perfectly with a little persuasion. Honda says they're discontinued, but luckily A4H-TECH has them.

I drove the Civic the day I got back to Ireland and it literally died on me  I had to push it myself, into a housing estate. What happened was the car clonked out and turning the key wasn't doing anything. You can hear the starter. I gave it a minute and turned the key. Car sprang into life, but I noticed my radio reset itself. That usually tells me my battery disconnected.

The day after, I checked the battery terminals. The negative side was loose enough where it could pop off. Loosed the nut and pushed the terminal down, so it was grabbing the battery better. Cranked the nut down and now its not going anywhere. So far, the car is behaving itself. I'll keep you posted if something happens again.

I had a lot of stuff waiting for me from the post, like these PIAA bulbs. I swapped out all the bulbs on the rear of the car.

I've had the omamori on the right since 2019, when I went to Tokyo. It was getting old, so I asked my cousin to get me another while she was in Japan.

Update on my car. Its still giving trouble. Its the same symptom I've been experiencing the last while. Hiccups in the lower RPM range. Heres what I think:

It can't be ignition related, since the car isn't cutting out in the higher RPM range like it was before. Plus everything in the distributor has been refreshed.
The car is getting enough air, but maybe its the sensor on the throttle body?
Other thing I'm leaning towards is the fuel pump? You can hear it prime, but maybe its starting to die. The car has a done little mileage since installing a new fuel filter too.

The issue seems to happen when the car is cold or not fully warm. Between 2,000 to 3,500RPM with very light throttle. Any ideas?

Finally found a genuine grille that was local enough to me. Paid more than I like, but it'll complete the car.

WechatIMG22.jpg

Parts arrived from Japan. Hardware for the grille, fuel pump repair kit, fuel line clip, and timing belt tensioner.

WechatIMG24.jpg

Pulled the pump from my car and started taking it apart. I've never done anything like this, but it was fairly straight forward.

WechatIMG25.jpg

Done and you can see how fresh it looks.

WechatIMG26.jpg

New pump in and you can see the grille is fitted too. So happy the gaping hole is gone. Less chance of something putting a hole in my Koyorad too.

I took the car for a spin, to see if the new pump fixed my issue. It didn't... I'm going to replace the main relay next. I don't think its ignition related since the car isn't running rich or igniting heaps of fuel. I do get pops from the exhaust, but I say thats more to do with the exhaust setup I have.

WechatIMG23.jpg

Cant be much more to replace on your fueling system now? Hopefully it gets resolved soon

The fuel pressure regulator? I'm learning as I go haha. I'm taking note of every part changed, the date and mileage.

I doubt its an issue with a new part I installed. Its either brand new Honda or a reputable brand.

Good friend of mine gave me this ETC card device when I was giving him a spare ignition coil I had. I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to use it, but if I do, I need to figure out placement.

I've been buying parts from Japan for the past month and everything finally arrived.
IMG_6843.jpg

Water pump for when I get the timing belt changed. Main relay that will hopefully fix my car.
IMG_6847.jpg

Some eyebolts for a harness I need to install.
IMG_6848.jpg

Cusco strut bars, front and rear.
IMG_6846.jpg

Tactical Art bumper duct. I'm planning on buying some ducting from the local motorsports store. Run that between the bumper duct and the Icebox.
IMG_6845.jpg

I was scrambling, looking for the final part and it happened to be put inside one of the Cusco boxes.
IMG_6844.jpg

Arvou shift knob. I've been watching their shop's S2000 run on the touge and Tsukuba. Massive fan of Arvou.
IMG_6849.jpg

Worked on changing out the relay. Didn't break any clips!
IMG_6855.jpg
IMG_6856.jpg

New vs old.
IMG_6857.jpg

After installation, I went for a drive. Car didn't sputter YET. I ordered a Skunk2 TPS, just in case the relay isn't the issue. About 2-3 weeks wait because theres zero stock in Europe...

Cusco strut braces, front and rear, installed.
IMG_6887.jpg

It hurt seeing the paint chip off, as I cranked the nuts down :nono:
IMG_6888.jpg

I had to mess around with the rear. The first attempt of fitting it, it didn't sit correctly. Then I checked if theres a difference between the left and right plates. Turned out that Cusco flipped them. The Cusco logo was facing me, but the plates were switched. Got that sorted and it fits nice.
IMG_6889.jpg

Just driving it a little, I noticed a huge difference.
