Anyone here know which ones are most likely to need replacement when a gearbox is whining loudly?

Mainshaft:

(Bearings are 15, 16 and 17)

Countershaft:
M__1500.jpg

(Bearings are 13, 14, 15 and 16)

Casing:

Bearings are 7 and 8.)

I don't really want to replace ones that don't require it to keep costs down.

Also, anyone know a cheaper way of replacing synchros? The synchroniser assemblies from Honda are £739+VAT in total! At that price I won't be doing them, even just replacing the 1-2 synchro is £319+VAT! :nono:

Mfactory do a full synchro set for about £180, they also do a full bearing set for about £340

apparently the gearbox input bearing is one of the first to go, so guess thats 7 or 8?!

Ah I didn't know they did synchro and bearing kits, cheers for the headsup chaps!

So the full rebuild kit comes to about £500, that's not to bad to be honest.

An maybe even a shorter final drive while your there

Shorter final would be no good to me, but a 3/4/5 kit is on the wishlist!

Rebuild plus 1/3/4/5 gearkit = £1176. Hmm...

tbh the expense of a longer 1st doesn't seem worth it for the extra few mph it will yield!

Maybe not, I'm not entirely sold on it either. It's certainly not worth it for road use, but I am considering it from a competition viewpoint. That extra few mph in 1st would make a difference at autotest events.

yeah my mate runs it on his hillclimb DC2, says it slips in very easy too being straight cut

Shame they don't do an option like spoons gearset, you can get about 10mph more than oem out of 1st in that!!

Yes that would be great, ATS an OS Giken do some rather extreme ratios too, but I believe anything over 3.07 and you need to replace the mainshaft which gets uber expensive.

My ultimate setup would be the 1/3/4/5 gearset with a 4.05 final and a B18C to pull it all. Should see nearly 50mph in 1st with that setup, pull to around 135mph and still manage 1700rpm drops between gears.

Oh how I like to dream. If only work was busy enough to do the overtime I need!

Just ordered this, may be of interest to you

BSK-SYN101 Type R GSR B16 Bearing Seal and Carbon Synchro KIt - Synchrotech Transmissions Inc

Comes supplied with carbon coat synchros similar to mfactory items, also a set of OEM bearings as well as the synchro clips and all seals

Doesn't come with some of the needle bearings, however imagine these would be fairly cheap from Honda, also no diff bearings since these are different on B16B/B18C diffs compared to other B series ones

That is a good price, cheers for the link!

I would guess the bearings it includes would be the ball bearings most likely to need replacement?

Yup, comes with the ball bearings that sit at either ends of the main/countersafts

The mfactory bearing kit is more expensive as it comes with the diff bearings (available separately from mfactory) and also the sleeve type needle bearings that slide onto a couple points of the shafts (these are much smaller bearings than the proper ball bearing main items so imagine would be cheaper from honda)

Will let you know when i receive the kit :)

Edit:

looks like the following bearings included in that kit-

7, 8, 13, 14, 15

Just to clarify, our bearings are not standard bearings. Although we start off with OEM bearings, they are then disassembled and put through our treatment process which reduces friction by 50% and increases load bearing by over 80%; hence the name "HLHS - High Load, High Speed" :)

Based on Honda of America pricing, it adds around $50 or so on top which is a bargain for what you are getting as there is simply nothing on the market that can compare to the performance of our bearings, short of getting some custom ceramic bearings made.

If you factor in shipping costs to UK, I'm sure it's still cheaper than Honda UK pricing for the full set of OEM bearings.

I had a set of Mfactory HLHS bearings fitted 10k miles ago when I got my new 4.9 mfactory final drive fitted and it has been absolutly perfect! :) Used Torco MTF that Mfactory recommended and its been all good! :)

BIG thumbs up for synchrotech, that's the kit arrived already

However got stung £55 on import duties, ouch!

I also use the Torco MTF and have done the past 3 gearbox oil changes and I have to say that its great stuff. Ive used Honda MTF, AMSOIL Synthetic mtf and 10w40 engine oil temporary and the Torco is the best yet:nice:

£6ish per litre is reasonable too from nimbus motorsport and great service from them every time!

The pricing on your website shows in Pounds Stirling, are these still chipped form America? If so, shipping, VAT, import duty etc for the full rebuild kit with syncros could get pricey! :((

i can get you the bearings and snychros at a cheaper price mate,

PM me what you need

Derek

Totally agree mate, Torco MTF has been perfect and Nimbus motorsport were great to deal with! :nice:

Yea you will get hit with atleast £60 extra for import duty mate as thats what I paid when it got shipped from mfactory. But they done me a great overall deal so it was no biggy! good luck! :nice:

FYI, was in Honda today and all of those needle type bearings are about 20 quid each, oooocha

You stripped your box to have a look at the condition of the selectors etc?

Lucky for me the synchro hubs and selector forks are in good condition, however the reverse selector has some notches out it and another part of the main selector assembly is a little bent

Overall it's costing me another £290 for the remaining parts, so including the order from synchrotech and the import duty, grand total for a gearbox build is £690 which includes

-ALL oem bearings apart from diff bearings
-diff to FD bolts (10)
-synchrotech carbon lined synchros, full 1-5 set
-driveshaft hub nuts
-lower ball joint split pins
-reverse selector assembly
-part of the main selector assembly
-oem seal kit
-couple other odd bits

No labour as i'm doing all the work myself, however it gives you a good idea of price for a gearbox build, the only bearings i am reusing are the diff bearings, my Spoon diff out the other box has only done 5k miles from new including the bearings so these will be ok
