As most of you know i trashed my car and am strongly considering a EK9 but i'm a bit concerned about the lack of power and torque which is making me consider an EP3 (K20).

What are your views especially those who have been on track with the B16B.

Don't suggest a engine swap...

Thank you

I wouldnt bother with the ep3 Ian, from what i heard they are not as fun to drive or actually feel that much quicker than a dc2

Just my 2p

Rather have the EK9. EP3`s arent all they`re cracked up to be. On paper they seem great but when it comes to it they`re quite disappointing in my opinion.

MK2 CRX with very simple mods will be all over it and from what you had done to your Civic you`d probably be the same.

i would like to know this too. i have nearly 7k saved up i currently have a ek3 and i really dont know what to do. i love ek9's but im in 2 minds do i go for comfort and a more modern car or the rawness of the 9. what is the speed difference between the 2 is the 9 in a different class or does the ep3 still keep with it :drive:

No quicker than a DC2 whatsoever...& lack the all important slip-diff:nono: A Type-R "badge" for the masses IMO, but lacking the dynamic edge of an EK9 or DC2

A B16'd EK9 is very similar on the road to a B18 ITR from experience with Olly_EK9's car & my own...the EK9's ~50kg weight advantage negates any power defecit..

No doubt the same tuning principles that work wonders on a B18 can be applied to the 9 too. Toda mani, hiflow/Decat + 2.5" exhaust & you will improve on the stock setup...

More than capable on track as a 1600 too...

Cant see lack of power being an issue for a car that hits 60 ~6secs & pulls to 140+MPH...

A B18 swap is always a simple upgrade to be put on the back burner for a rainy day too:nice:

Alternatively, would an ITR not tickle your fancy? Very affordable nowadays in these harsh economic times:)

Get a 9 IAN you know it make's sence!:secret:
Then drop your B18 in there & sell off the B16B!

But if you want to go for the EP3 then it would have to be a JDM imo!

EP3 JDM is far to far out of my reach and i love EK9's in CW especialy pre facelift. The idea is to transfer alot of my stuff to the 9 but can't be arse with the rig ral of swapping engines again and that lil top end rattle has come back on my 18.... Sure its a broken spring...

Both great affordable track cars. The EP3 can be sorted easily, see Mark Chese, Lottie & Saras from HOT.
The EK9 is supposedly the more 'fun' car to drive but I wouldnt have thought there would be much in it once modding starts.
The B16 only loses out on the straights to more powerful cars, personally I live with it easily. Although if I had a spare box I would like to try the 4.78FD with the longer of the MF ratios - for the longer 'straight' tracks. There is so much to consider - engine/gears/ecu, mine flys round, top end isnt great (As I have said before though - keeps me out of trouble otr). I have only a TB mod & Hondata to do, and slicks to try.
There are some very good deals on EP3's at the mo, its a car that blends more - doesnt attract so many vandals and is more of the sleeper imo :)

Standard they are all fairly close on track imo, it all comes down to mods/driver/track knowledge.

I would get a DC5 if i was in your position.... I'm considering getting one myself

I had the chance to try my friends DC5 from standard through its modding.

At first totally standard it was boring, and had no feel to it. Although very quick and engine is sooooo smooth. I'm now convinced the K20 is a superior engine to the B series.

Then on came the exhaust and intake...brings life back into the car...As TBH without the exhaust note it is just plain boring. Again car pulls sooo well and throttle response is very good too.

then some strut brace and fast road setup....which i haven't had the chance to tried fully. But with strut brace it brought back some of the Feel.

In my opinion...the DC5 still doesn't feel as plugged in as my EK9, (but it is quite moded).

I mean there isn't much in it between my car and the DC5, but with the same mods done to a K20 it will destroy me.

DC5 is actually quite short wheel base, smaller than it looks in pics....I say Definately give it a try

am I happy with B16B power? Yes ; is K20 better? Yes

again as stressed, the ek9 is not made for the straight line power. sure it is a powerful engine, however, its the way the car feels when carrying speed.
Agreeing with tmus, the k20 is far superior in the right car, however, imo, the ek9 is where the fun is.

All usefull people.

I am reading every post and taking it in.

I just feel after being used to the extra 18 grunt the 16 is a big back step...

Can't afford a DC5 unfortunatly on both parts car and insurance...

its a tough decision, but You will definitely notice the lack of torque and response from B16 - B18, but not so much in VTEC.

I think the best will be getting a Higher mileage EK9 on the cheap and put your engine in it, while using the EK9 gearbox.

you didn't have LSD in your EK4?

No i didn't mate and i was really struggling getting out the slower corners...

Dunx has a silver RX lightweight with windy windows no stereo with 120k miles at £4500...

Really want white... And lower mileage for the rest of the components.

LOL not quite but nearly.

i know my JDM EP3 cost me alot, that was only coz of its very low mileage, modified parts and rare red colour. but have you looked at torque gt's website theres a nice little gem of a ep3 and some dc5's. Japanese performance car specialists - Torque-GT.co.uk
its not hard to get a uk spec ep3 up to the same spec as a jdm one.

My budget for a new car is only about the £5500 mark which seems to be a CW 70k EK9 in grad 3.5 to 4

Or an older higher mileage EP3 but then i have to change,

seats
exhaust system
coilovers
cage

etc etc etc

Got all ths on my EK4 so makes sense to get a 9...

ANY IDEAS ON MY TOP END RATTLE?

Doesn't do it cold, never noticed it before.

Very intermitant, done it on long journey up and then wouldn't go completely dissapeared out on track.

Then came back on my way home.

Only does it on idle and when run for long period of time. Like something is loose.

Not having much luck

Parking ticket
B18 problems
Smashed car

Common problem

CARS!

if i were you i would go for a 9 mostly cos you have a good bit of stuff that will change over from your ek4 and personally i think 9s are alot nicer than ep3s but thats just me
