Im possibly getting a 96 spec S80 Box, As my UK Spec is on high mileage and needs fixing!

How easy is it to swap Final Drives over ????

I thought it would be in the "want to change final drives" thread but its not!

tried searching and cant find anything on here!

If anyone has an answer would be much appreciated :)

:nice:

i opened up my box and was going to attempt this but look to complicated so i just took it to a gearbox man and got new bearings in it wile it was out

this is no easy job especially if you haven't done this before or worked at gearboxes in the past, my advice would be let a mechanic at

Looks like im going to have to ring some people and get some quotes :nice: ~

What bearings did you replace while the gearbox was out ??? As it may be worth me doing those while its out..........

doesn't seem that bad to me imo, as long as you dont rush the job and set everything out in order and know the correct torque settings for each part you cant really go too wrong, your only really stripping down the countershaft. just set each piece out in order as your taking them off and then reverse the process when building them back onto the other fd. granted there are some tricky and fiddley bits to do as well. i'm going to do it in a week or two with my mate to help out and keep me right. :nerv::nice:

After working on my box I could confidently strip it down again but that is mainly due to gaining experience by working on it and following rebuild guides etc

They are def not easy to work on until you have a bit of knowledge. It makes it 10x easier to open the box and put the casing back together when you have 2 people, I did it on my own the 1st time and then had help from my Dad the 2nd time I had to open and close the box

As for the diff/final drive, once you have lifted out the shafts and selectors the diff will slide out very easily by turning the casing upsidedown. All of the bolts that connect the final drive gear are left hand thread so CLOCKWISE TO LOOSEN just remember that.

When I put an OEM DC2 4.7 final drive into my ek9 I also had to swap the countershaft and 1st gear for the DC2 units. I believe that the M-Factory FD can be installed on its own without having to change anything else

You will have to change the countershaft and 1st gear for the uk unit, seeing as the diffs are the same there is no need to unbolt the final drive from the diff, just swap the final drive/diff as one unit between the boxes...........

Fairly straight forward, just need patience

There WILL be parts you notice that are worn and need replacing so the cost could mount up, do it once, do it right

Well actually do it once............. I'm going to strip my box down again when the new engine goes in to fit a longer first gear, but thats another story :p

Honda manual is very helpful, it's like the bible really, study it for a bit and you will get on fine

pretty easy job if your a tech, especially on a b-series

quality read there! can someone recommend me a good sealant for the gearbox housings or is it best just to stick with the honda bond stuff?

I used some loctite stuff from Halfords, worked a treat!

As long as you use a decent high temp sealant you will be fine

where are you located mate? Maybe someone with a bit of experience could vgive you a hand. It's actually quite easy so long as you take your time

doing this job come friday! fed up having a fd and flywheel sitting there doing nothing!:run:

cheers for the link! going to be a fun weekend for me! cant wait to get at it!
