Basically, How easy is it for someone with average knowledge to dismantle / re-assemble a gearbox>?

Basically i have an S80 and a Y21, No money for a gearset upgrade atm but for what i want i think Y21 gearset & S80 LSD & Final drive will be the best i can get from the two,

But one... Is it worth it? or should i just use the S80 as it is ?

Or 2... Would you take on the task? What needs replacing when doing this? If anything ?

Sorry fairly new to working on the engine / gearbox side of things, concentrated on chassis and breaking up until now but having a b18 come up for a bargain price its forced to need answers before ive had time to research it all! Any help would be greatly appreciated!! :nice:

To your question are they easy to dismantle , yeah they are , as easy as you will get. All the inspection and thrust clearances can be done by yourself only special tools you need would be a torque wrench ,gear pullers and a hydraulic press.

If you download a integra manual it will have all the checks needed in it and you can use this as a reference too:

B-series transmission teardown/rebuild tutorial - Honda-Tech

But if you have an s80 in good condition , I would just use that at first. It will give you a good idea what ratios you want and if the standard LSD suits you plus you will be able to strip the spare y21 and learn how to rebuild it.

it is, im doing mine atm i just changed all bearings and checked all synchro's, im havin a problem closin up the box do i cant get the c clip to sit in the countersdhaft bearing its very annoyin everything else has ben simple to do

thats proberly the hardest bit to do on them tbh, i had the same problem,

i had me holding the circlip and a friend of mine slowly pushing the casing together, just be very carefull not to crack the casing as they are quite britle

By far the only hard bit in the whole strip down and rebuild, I didn't even have to use and gear pullers everything came off by hand. Watch out for the final drive bolts if you are undoing them, they're left hand thread. Cost about 4 quid each from Honda if you have to replace them.
I spent ages trying to get the c ring to seat properly and think it finally clicked in place when I selected reverse as I was checking the gears.

do you have to put in a driveshaft cup into the diff and turn the crownwheel with it in order to select the gears no??

i must try do this to get the c clip in as i was at it all day yesterday with no luck

better have the shop manual on hand - easy to install the synchro hub the wrong way up - also friction damper 1st and 2nd easy to get mixed up. you need tools to press the gear stack back on...........

What about just changing LSD & FD over????

Or do you have to remove gears anyway??

As i would happily just have the LSD & FD on the Y21 ???

You'd have to grind parts of the y21 box to get the LSD and fd to fit. If you remove the selector forks I'm sure you can remove the gear towers complete.

So Swapping the complete Y21 gearset into the S80, Then just putting the FD and LSD on would be "easy" ????

the cost of gearbox labour is all that stopping me fitting a higher FD so expensive..

that aside, its no doubt expensive as you need them to take gearbox off etc???, where as i have 2 engines.. next to each other,

Would swapping the Y21 gear set into the S80 box but keeping the S80 LSD & FD Be a hard job ? I just want to know if its worth me and my mate having a go at it while we swap engines or if i should just leave the S80 as it is ?

If you're fitting jet the y21 ears into the s80 housing and keeping the s80 LSD/fd you'll need to swap the y21 gears onto the fd. Shouldn't be too difficult to swap the gears about.
Took me a couple of days to strip and rebuild my gearbox, planning on doing it again when I swap for a higher fd again this year

Piece of piss

Spread the circlip with pliers and slot the casing on

The circlip will not be seated correctly but don't worry

Bold up and seal the box

lift the box up on its side as it would sit in the car and the circlip will pop into place

The shafts have some float in the box, they are not fixed! Tilting into the operating position allows the shaft to slot in place and the circlip to clip into the bearing

:nice:

^i got sorted....a tiny lip had formed in the top of the casing preventing the countershaft bearing sitting up fully into the casing. once i sanded the lip down it sat in no problem.

big problem do i got the box back together and onto the car and now i only have 1st,3rd and reverse...i feel like crying. and when the gearstick is in neutral and i try start the car it jumps as if its in gear

Leave the S80 as it is, if it's a 98 spec S80 with the shorter FD then try and source an EK9/EK4 4th and 5th gear and fit them in - really good combination

If you go swapping gears/casings then you would need to use the S80 mainshaft to match the FD, also you would want to use the S80 selector forks as these are stronger in the type R boxes being welded unlike the non type R boxes

Very easy to strip the main and countershafts, when i fitted my ATS gearset it took 2 hours to strip the shafts, clean everything and reassemble with new syncho rings/bearings/3 4 5 gears. Key is to lay everything out in order when you remove it, the synchro hubs are lipped so can only be fitted in one direction - outlined in the honda workshop manual

Jamie - as long as the synchro hubs were operating as they should when you assembled the box, i would guess that the selector assembly in the corner of the box which works the selector forks has been put together wrong :((

Top advice right there. Wish I knew this when I put mine back together
