Living with an EK9

I use my ek9 every single day, it's my only car and I put loads of miles on it but I love driving it everyday ansmd as long as you take care of it then it's fine for everyday use,

To the op have you considered a dc5 for a dd? you can pick up a average teg for around £7,500 with 70,000 on the clock. Much better car than a ep3

Hmm... not really sold on the styling as standard (which it would stay) I'm afraid. Even the facelift doesn't 'float my boat'...

Anyway... many thanks for the replies. You've given me plenty to think about.

-I'm glad parts are easily available; thats a niggly doubt put to rest.
-I see the argument about the 'more comfortable' EP3. To be fair though, its the hardcore nature of the EK9 that attracts me to it. I've also ridden round in my mates a fair bit, so the spartan all round nature of the EK isnt going to surprise me...
-DC5 Tegs are still going for the 10k mark if you're going to do it properly... too high even if I did like their looks.
-I know some of you are flummoxed by the prospect of DDing a EK9. I also see where you're coming from. The plan would be to DD it for a year or so and pick up a beater. My primary concern (aside from trying to insure the damn thing in greater manchester) was the availability of parts. Oh well... about a grand to save and I'll post up some pics of whatever I choose.
Friendly forum, by the way!

Check out my 'home forum' at "www.octaneboost.co.uk" if you want. Very enthusiastic and welcoming multi-marque site with some nice metal, including my buddy 'swampy200's now deceased Ek9 in page 2 of 'your cars'.

Many thanks!

your right mate i do appologise

You should be apologising to 689R instead. Take away your seam welding and a few other choice goodies and you're driving a very expensive white EK4 with stickers.

Though I do agree about the over 100 MPH comment, if something can pull away from me at 110 MPH I couldn't care less on the road because it's getting into stupid, instant driving ban, multiple car pile-up, territory.

Thing is there is NO suitable conditions for doing that sort of speeds on a public road

We've all done it though, it's a chance you sometimes take

If your going to DD it for a year you will love it, they're very cheap to run service wise, just make sure you always have plenty oil in it and change the oil/filter frequently as well as keeping an eye on other obvious things :)

So a mile or so of straight motorway with no one else on it wouldn't be a suitable condition?

Considering it'll no doubt be wider than any track and longer than KHs straight, i'd say its - as far as conditions go, more suitable.

Not saying it's legal, smart or something anyone should do obv.

i easily clock up 700+ miles a week in my ek9. i drive 340 miles home on a friday and back again on the sunday, plus driving it around at the weekends too. i've had 400 miles out of one tank easily with a few blasts once i'm off the motorway.

change the oil regularly and make sure it's serviced by someone who looks after cars not some work experience kid.

i had a cheap dd but sold it as everytime i drove it i wished i was in the ek9, plus thats another car to tax, mot and insure every year which if its a cheap and nasty runabout will possibly cost alot to get through mot's.

only downside about mine on the motorways is the exhaust noise but i'm getting a bung made up to deal with that.
buy an ek9 you won't regret it

I'd also say an ek9 is pretty much perfect as a daily driver (depending on your job etc) and most of us haven't got kids to struggle with yet so they are awesome and IF you ever get bored of it theres so much you can do to them its great fun!

Why the specific advice about the oil, chaps? Does it not apply to any engine?

Yes

But the high revving vtec engine may use more than normal engines and can be catastrophic if you run it dry

A heavily modded car will indeed be hard to live with everyday, however, mine (lightly modded eg: suspension breathing etc) is very easy to live with. petrol consumption isnt too bad either and the good thing is, the reliabilty is always there.

ep3 no brainer really better fuel ecomany, ek9 is much more fun to drive and you get more of a feel for whats going on but feul wise ep3 is better or atr

I wrote off an ep3 last year because the back end let go on a bend at about 35-40mph so I'm not the biggest fan of them anymore but I love the engines and think they are great. Its all down to what you personally want from your car and what you plan to do with it. ek9 is much more fun but in my opinion ep3 is far more civilized and easier to drive long distance etc. Its a very close contest with prices for certain models being the same as agood condition ek9

i have a good mate with an 03 plate ep3, and when i was lookiing to get a type r ,i gave his a good test drive but also had a mate with an ek9 (which i ended up buying off him )
now imo the ek9 was a far more fun and rewarding car to drive just seemed to stop, handle and go so much better, and overall i think is a much better set up car , although i must say my 9 has the 1800 stroker kit ,apexi neo and ferrodo pads so it wasn't a stock v stock comparison,
i think each has its pro's and cons
the ek9 is more exclusive although more expensive
obviousley an older car (for all the plate snobs out there)
ep3 more refined(some would say soft and a bit poofy....lol) and better on motorways etc
i also think if looked after the 9 will hold it's money better
ek9 cant be beat for a good a/b road blast
in the end i chose the ek9 mainly because , better fun , more rare ,hold it's money, and i dont need to use it everyday,
saying that it did take a while to get me head round paying the same money( £7k ) for a 98 car ,when i could of got a 04 plate for the same money
