Strange noise coming from gearbox

I was testing my new paradas yesterday on a near by touge when all of a sudden i noticed a rattling sound coming from the gearbox -from the passengers side (drivers side for RHD`s).

What i noticed is as the car revs up the sound gets louder, same frequency but louder. Moreover it stops once i press i the clutch. I remember noticing a similar sound in the past but it only went on in cold mornings and it was a very settle sound.

I thought this might have to do something with the shifter bushings i replaced recently -maybe a washer from a loose bolt i forgot to tight. Jack the car up today, went under it and all was in place. I removed the cat heat shield, tested all bolts under and inside the car and went to test it but no luck.

Gearbox oil was changed 5K km`s ago, flywheel bearing was changed when i did the swap 40k km`s back. Clutch job is due January, after the holiday. Until now OEM clutch is used. Could it be a shaft bearing or the clutch release bearing? I`ve uploaded a couple of short videos i did in case the sound helps determine the cause, until i visit the garage on Monday. In the second one i`m rolling with about 2K revs and i release and press the clutch again. It`s easy to notice the sound it makes when i release the clutch pedal.

im on the hunt for a nice uprated one

i suggest you do the same

Thanks for the input Lee. Do you reckon it could be coming from the main or counter shaft bearings? Because i have a 440 mile trip coming soon. I will visit my garage tomorrow but it`s always better having a second opinion. I have already ordered an ACT clutch kit which includes a release bearing and tomorrow will also order a synchro kit with bearings as well, `cause my 3rd begun crunching. 105.000 miles is a good time to recondition my tranny i guess.

Is the release bearing something that could leave me stranded in the freeway?

its the thrust bearing m8 so when you get the clutch done in january that will sort it :nice:

That's not your release bearing mate, if it was it would only make noise when the clutch pedal is pressed down because that's the only time it does anything. If it makes the noise when you release the clutch out of gear it's your mainshaft bearings. hope this helps

By buying an exedy clutch kit, will this come with a mainshaft bearing? Or release bearing?

Mine is making the strange noise when i release the clutch/driving along in gear and on idle..... So this would suggest mainshaft bearing right?

Actually alot the time there noisy is when the clutch is released not pressed in as the gearbox mainshaft is spinning and they rest against pressure plate so the bearing is spinning.

The release bearing is normally included with the exedy clutch kit but my advise would be to throw it away and use a new oem honda release bearing. Only ones I see that don't start making noise after a few months.

Thanks for that information mate.

Im a bit unsure what i need though as im not sure whats making the noise/needs replacing, mainshaft or release bearing?

I just get the obvious noise when i release the clutch and goes away when clutch is pressed.

I dont want to order a release bearing if it turns out to be the mainshaft? Or vise verser.

in my case was the mainshaft bearing. replaced all bearings and syncro rings and now feels like silk.

sounds to me like your release bearing if the noise is when you let the pedal off .

i have fitted many exedy clutches and my advise also is throw away the release bearing you get with it and buy an oem one as they get noisy again after a month or so

if tht's the case it sounds like the release bearing is not fitted correctly as it has clips to secure it to the release fork to pull it away from the pressure plate when not being used. the release bearing does not do anything when the clutch pedal is not being pressed. if it doesn't make a noise when you push the clutch pedal then it is not your release bearing. if the noise stops when the clutch is pressed that is because the gearbox has been disengaged and the mainshaft stops spinning hence mainshaft bearing.
some multi plate clutches such as the ogura make a grating noise when the clutch is pressed, this is totaly normal however annoying it may be

Going by what your saying, my mainshaft bearing is on its way out,

going by the others, my release bearing is on its way out..........

I am really not sure on this so i can only go by someones word. Who is actually right here??

I dont want to buy more parts then i need if i can help it.

i've the exact same problem and was told it wasn anything wrong with clutch that it was problem within the box

Mine makes a noise when it's engaged and out of gear, as soon as i put the pedal down it goes. I'd like to know the villain of it too :S

like leek9 said release bearing, most likely where it contacts the clutch fork, my car does this also.

I can still hear the noise when im in gear driving though. You can hear it both in and out of gear but goes completely silent when clutch is pressed?? Could the suspect still be release bearing?
