172 clio or 182 !

Yeah the mk1 looks really cool, but will be alot harder to find a good condition one, they are pretty dam rare now, theres a stock 2 litre mk2 with fsh 12 mot and 6 months tax for £990 :0

Obviously it wont be immaculate but pretty dam cheap, hmmm could you recommend any other choices, like ive said I dont have any car in mind, well k20 Ek9 would be nice lol, ive scrolled through all off pistonheads and theres nothing that catches my eye which Id eant to spend my money on!

Tbh I'm hoping to go Thailand for a month or two after my holiday in June so looking for something cheap, quick ish and nice to drive, jap preferably for high reving and and reliable, I know you get what you pay , most off the time anyway

Mate ask yourself how many people commented on this thread have driven both? also people who have had Hondas from an early age seem to be the most blinkered car owners ever and you may not get a balanced response.

But a nice ph1 can be had for next to nothing and if the work that a 90k car needs has been done you are laughing.

Or get a 16v and get a 172 lump in there

went for a drive in my mates 172 phase 1 last night..

Seriously how you compare these 2 car's is beyond me.. Literally laughable.. Both hot hatchs is about as close as you can go, oh and wheels and an engine.. But there is nothing race about the Clio 172

My EK9 was standard so is this clio it is also pretty damm mint..

i had to keep telling myself its a 2.0 litre as it just feels wank compared to the B16B.. yeh its tourquey but so is my diesel van..

handling is good yes, nothing stand out amazing and the steering feel leaves a lot to be desired, he has also only just had the tracking done..

with the standard seats, it felt terrible sitting high and almost didn't feel central to the steering wheel ( however i find this on pretty much all french car's )

IF you are used to the Rawness, top end power, and handling you can throw into a corner and just hold it then the CLio is not the one for you.

What i will say though is that the Clio sport 197 things are incredible.. It seems Honda made the Ek9 and let the Type R go down hill but Renault started building their cup 172's and such ok but now have perfected it..

Honestly dude, an Ek4 with decent suspension would rip the Clio a new arse hole, and after all isn't more of driving about how the car makes you feel..
the clio gave me no confidence, it was predictable in the corners but at no point didn't i feel i could just barrel into a corner and throw it round..

then you get the point of it having 400 CC more than the Ek9.. so we can safely talk B18C and B20 which then raises the Allready Better Ek9 into another level above the Clio..

Further more EK9 will hold it money more..

How ever i have yet to try out a 182.

just be a man and buy the V6..

******* LOL @ bumming the 197.

1240kg's with 25bhp of an advantage over the 172 with an extra 200kgs of weight? Settle down.

No arseholes would be ripped anywhere against a 172 Cup and any stock Civic no matter how much you love sushi and saki.

c'mon now lads lets just keep it to a debate. boy is on the forum to introduce his car and we all know we all like different models of cars. I have been on the forum for years now and just because it is a honda forum doesnt mean we all get into a slagging match.

Were a better forum than that and past threads that have gone on should be an example

Well my ek4 with an exhaust and a filter. Easily left a 172 which had an exhaust at least :)

Driven the clios and also maintain some too.

I prefer the Hondas but thats why Im here not on cliosport .

The Clio is without doubt one if not the best euro hot hatch , handles really good and out of the box they match the civic r.

Imo though they are let down by their rear beam axle , driving position and general hunger for parts if they are tracked.

Only one way to settle this....
Fight!!!

No independent rear suspension?
No lsd?
Any chassis strengthening done like the seam welding and extra bracing found on the ek9?
I bet they don't even have a rear anti roll bar standard?
What in the way of handling modifications does the cup have over the normal 172? And does it have anything the ek9 doesn't?

no lsd
no body strengthening
rear torsion bar set up

the cup models have the speedline turini wheels, wider track, and different suspension which has increased caster for a sharper turn in, thinner glass, bigger rear spoiler, no abs, erm thats about it me thinks! yes it doesnt have all that bracing and welding the ek9 has but it probably doesnt even need it

now the trophy model has remote reservoir dampers as standard, thats something the ek9 doesnt have lol!

I'm extremely unsure a standard Civic Jordan with 158bhp could cause me any problems on a dry track/day.

Not trolling in the slightest or out to belittle a car i love (ek9) but people seem to think their B16 engines are unmatched by the Clios F4R, which you'd be a fool to think.

Ek9's have a monocoque chassis aswell dont they?

i love the ek9, i want an ek9, i just think people need to give the clio the respect it deserves

and they do 0-60 in 5.7 seconds lol!

But when standard , some things make little difference and for what they are , the clio's can match the civic around the track .

When their modified the Civic definitely has larger scope for improvement as it has a greater chassis IMO

you can improve a clio aswell, lets be honest here, a car can be only be as good as someones wallet

Exactly , and you will get a higher level of performance and reliability out of the Civic for the same amount of money , which gives a good indication of the better base.

is the ek9 really the better car tho thats what i want to find out

the clio may not have all bits that the civic has, but put them on a track and lets see if those bits make all the difference
