Hello guys and girls,
I used to have an EJ9 around a year ago now. and am buying another one shortly. Now im a 2nd year student studying motorsport technology at the university of Huddersfield.
I am interested in motorsport as you would expect, but never had any tracktime. I was wondering what you people would think to me tracking an EJ9 in a few novice sessions to have a go. i know its not a powerful car, but i cannot afford a powerful motor at this point in my life.

Any hints and tips would also be appreciated along with your thoughts, good or bad.

cheers :)

Get it on track, it doesn't matter how fast you are! I was more pleased when I passed a few exotic cars in my lil' EK9 than I would have been in a Ferrari!

just do it. Probably be worth fitting better brake pads (or at least take a set of spare fronts with you) as you can overheat oem ones which then tend to crumble. Same with tyres, if you're not sure they'll survive the day take a spare pair of fronts, but then with low power and weight you're not likely to burn through them too quickly.

You might be badly outgunned by a lot of the other people there but doesn't mean you won't enjoy it.

thanks guys, i would probably buy a set of wheels to use as fronts for track and a decent set of new discs and pads. i know most people would be overtaking me right left and centre, but i think id have a laugh.

anyt of you guys driven there, used your car on track, then driven home?

get it on track mate and have some fun :) i took my subaru down to knockhill once and had just over 300 bhp and i was getting passed by evos etc but i didnt care as it was still fun for me

Personally i would check the car over make sure its in good running order then take it to the track before buying spare wheels and brakes or changing the suspension.
Obviosuly if you have the spare cash to do that then go for it.

I used to track my saxo standard before seeing what i needed/wanted and the same with the EK9 i tracked that with **** budget tyres and oem pads before moving onto different tyres and pads.

A standard car can still be fun, it's only when you start finding the limits of the car you need to look at upgrading / changing parts.
A decent driver in a standard car will be quicker/safer round a track than someone whos spent money on their car but has no idea how to drive.

Just remember it's not a race and don't go balls deep first off.

well this is an encouraging response. i was awaiting the " dont bother if its not v-tec" type generic responses! haha
i am also worried about parts though, and wearing things out. i can cope with brake pads and tyres for instance. but suspension and so on???
i had unit3 (ebay) coilovers on my last one. they were more than capable of taming the mighty 1.4 in fast road use, but im not sure about track use tbh. Tein coilovers and such are really expensive for a student though.

Always driven mine to a track then home never been an issue but usually have a slow drive home after a hard day.
I always take spare tools, jack, water and oil with me just encase.

Thanks for your responses guys, really encouraging tbh. Any members on here tracked an ej9?

Just do it man, but be careful cause remember its your car aswell. Don't want to have an accident, firstly because you may hurt yourself or others and secondly you won't have a car!

Yeah, M!chael on here tracked his EJ9. He will probs pop up on here at somepoint :nice:

cheers kammy, yeh i wouldnt wana be without a car!! seeing as i commute to uni aswel! haha
ive been on this forum for quite a while, lurking aout looking at peoples projects and what not. but only just started posting really. from what ive experienced so far, a really good and helpful forum! thanks guys

 yeah same here, thats why im not taking my car on track haha

defo get involved man, its the best forum out there hands down! I joined them all when I started out and this was by far the most helpful and welcoming, never got any smart arse comments for having an EJ9 aswell
:win:

I took an ej9 to the nurburgring and did an 11:07. Answer your question? Ha

cheers kammy :)

haha matt, that is a pretty sweet time from a 1.4 16v, what mods was you running atr the time?

As kammy said I tracked my ej9 earlier on in the year. Fact is you can have in a car with 50hp if the car is light enough. Strip the car as much as you can,at the time I only had my rear seats out but as im sure kammy will confirm the car was quick in the corners...but naturally lacking on the straights.

If you have money to replace worn brakes,or if anything breaks on the car then go for it.

:nice:

I Did about 8 laps in my ej9 and it was so much fun.

Only had springs, air filter and backbox lol

Got an SiR now though

yeh i hope to move onto a vtec beast in a few years when i can properly afford it! haha

on my last EJ9 i had
coilovers,
induction kit (enclosed carbon box)
cold air feed,
4-2-1 manifold,
de-cat,
racetube
then just a racing steering wheel and ultralite alloy wheels.
was pretty nippy for a 1.4 16v.
my speedo once read 130mph. however i dont think this is possible in all honesty.

I'd leave the interior in for your first few sessions. Foam seats and a spare wheel won't make that much difference.

I think you'll be surprised how much your car will give before you run out of talent. As mentioned build up slowly instead of seeing red as soon as you leave the pit area and have an off.
I did a few autotests in my eg lsi with the only upgrades being 282mm and teg suspension. Held itself with a lot more expensive cars with decent amount of cash spent on them too.
