I have always run V-Power.

Anyone running 95 RON here? I believe it can cause pinging and decrease over all performance?

I'm with you on V-power, at the very least premium unleaded, and even that doesn't run it's best.

I don't think you'll experience pinking, ECU will take care of that, BUT, that's why it run's like a bag of ass. It retards the timing slightly to avoid detonation (pinking) leaving your performance capped.

95 RON is actually more explosive than 99 RON, which is a strange concept to get around. However, with the more volatile fuel comes pre ignition, which is fuel igniting from residual heat/compression before TDC. You can imagine the stress this puts on engine components as your piston is on it's up stroke, which is forced up by other pistons being pushed down from ignition, all of sudden you have a pre ignition and it loads the piston tremendously in the opposite direction.

Not only do you stress your engine components, but all that energy you just used to do it, is now wasted and not where you want it, at the wheels. All this translates to higher octane = less detonation and less detonation allows higher compression ratio, which in turn provides higher temperatures and pressures. No need for the thermodynamics, but it all equals more power ;)

So ECU does stop det, by altering the ignition timing, but why bother risking it, it definitely won't have any positive effects, apart from your wallet. If you use 99 RON, your ECU can have it's design timing, meaning you get the best performance and economy. So on all levels, if a car is designed to be used with premium fuels, use premium as much as you possibly can.

B-series? No way. 98 minimum. If I go to Germany, 100 :D

i use tesco momentum. 99 RON, same price as some BP standard unleaded :D

I used to be a v-power addict, but I'm leaning towards Tesco 99 now. There seems to be a lot of new tesco filling stations poping which means nice fresh and clean fuel tanks :))

Hmmm I used Tesco once and after a few days my 9 started running like a bag of pish and ran on 3 cylinders :s ...V power all the way

Was that about 16 months ago by any chance? I remember a lot of controversy with a certain 'supermarket's fuel at the time and I had my 2.0 16v 205 gti, dropped in some tesco '99' and had some horrible running probelms. Tank full of v-power and a new filter and throughout the tank the car got better and better until back up to normal. The original fuel filter was changed at time of conversion around 300 miles before new filter.

Definitely some shite fuel around at that time

Strangely enough it was when the new Tesco ultimate stuff was just being brought into Tesco fueling stations. My mate had the same problem in his ukdm dc2. He seemed to think that all the ultimate fuel is is the premium unleaded (95 Ron I believe) with additives that go off after a week or 2...I'm not sure whether I believe him on that but since I had my running problems I've never used Tesco fuel again

tesco momentum here, always used to be vpower but my closest shell closed down.

Tesco 99 on both my DC5 and Ek9, don't have a shell on the Isle of Wight so Tesco 99 is the highest grade.

some guys here in Iceland were telling me that I could see improvements in using 100 octane fuel for my B16B.
the problem that I see in that, is that it has lead in it :O
won't that be unhealthy for my engine and could possibly do something bad to it?
What can happen if I use leaded fuel in a B16B?

v power all the time. used 95ron when there was no v power and car didnt feel as sharp so i now make the effort to drive to the bp if v power is out. No tesco station near me.

iceland guy am i missing something why would you not just use unleaded??

Cool.

Never used 95 RON, but fuel is getting so expensive now :(

When I calculated the running costs of the EK9 and a diesel, there was nothing in it, due to the price of diesel now!

If I was going to sell up to save money, it would have to be a low powered turbo diesel of something like a 1.4 petrol.

I use to run 95 on my old JDM dc2 worked fine it has a knock sensor so will detect any pinging, saying that one in every 4 or 5 tanks did get v-power.

Now I has a diesel...

What diesel did you buy?

I'm sure my last Ek4 had a sticker in the filler cap that said 97 Ron+ meaning do not put anything in under 97 ron... am i the only one to have this ???
